WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Lauren Manis posted a game-high 19 points while adding five rebounds, as the Holy Cross women’s basketball team defeated Rhode Island 69-63.

Senior Infiniti Thomas-Waheed also had a solid game for Holy Cross (5-5), posting 17 points with seven rebounds and seven steals. Sophomore Megan Swords totaled 10 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Rhode Island was led by Nicole Jorgensen, who totaled 11 points and added seven rebounds. 

The Rams held the edge in rebounding, 42-32. Rhode Island shot 43.1 percent from the field, while Holy Cross shot 38.8 percent which included a 66.7 percent (8-for-12) stretch in the fourth quarter. The Rams missed seven free throws, shooting 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from the charity stripe. 

WOMAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES

  • Following the game, Thomas-Waheed was selected as the Woman of the Match presented the United States Marines.
  • She posted 17 points with seven rebounds and seven steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead and maintained its advantage throughout the first quarter, outscoring the Crusaders 18-9 in the first 10 minutes of play.
  • Holy Cross erased a 10-point deficit in the second quarter to tie the game for the first time late, but the Rams pulled ahead to lead 30-28 just before halftime.
  • Early in the third quarter, the Crusaders took their first lead of the game and led by as many as nine points. They outscored the Rams 15-7 to take a 43-37 advantage into the final quarter.
  • The Crusaders led by 10 early in the fourth, but Rhode Island pulled within four points late in the game. Holy Cross shot 67% in the fourth quarter (8-for-12) to close out the game and earn the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Swords earned a new career-high with 10 points in the win.
  • Thomas-Waheed set a new career-high for steals with seven.
  • The Crusaders committed less than 10 turnovers (9) for the first time this season.
