The Top Moments Of 2016

2015-2016 was a banner year for Holy Cross Athletics, and that momentum has carried forward through the first half of 2016-2017. Over the past 12 months, there have been many outstanding performances in competition by our student-athletes. With the calendar year drawing to a close, let’s take time to celebrate some of our best achievements of 2016. 


#1 –MEN’S BASKETBALL’S MAGICAL MARCH

Men’s basketball won the sixth Patriot League Championship in school history with a 59-56 victory versus Lehigh on March 9. The Crusaders were the first team in Patriot League history to win four road games in the conference tournament. Holy Cross then posted its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1953 with a 59-55 win over Southern on March 16.

 #2 – WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS

Women’s ice hockey won the New England Hockey Conference Open Championship for the second straight season, while finishing the year with an overall record of 24-3. The Crusaders defeated St. Anselm, 4-3 in overtime on Feb. 28.

#3 – MEN’S HOCKEY DEFEATS NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS

Men’s hockey defeated a pair of ranked opponents, downing No. 11 Providence on Oct. 15 at the DCU Center and No. 20 Union on Nov. 1 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. Providence won the 2015 national championship, while Union won the championship in 2014. After the loss to the Crusaders, Union has gone 8-1-1 and are currently No. 10 in the nation. This was the second time in program history that the Crusaders have defeated two nationally ranked teams in a season.

 #4 – A FIRST FOR MEN’S LACROSSE

Men’s lacrosse earned the first Patriot League Tournament bid in the history of the program with an 11-7 victory versus Boston University at Kuzniewski Field on April 22, making it the first time in the history of the program that the team earned a spot in postseason play. The Crusaders’ three Patriot League wins tied the program record, while they won three straight Patriot League games for the first time in program history.

#5 – SHERMAN QUALIFIES FOR NCAA ZONES

Casey Sherman qualified for the 2016 NCAA Zone A Diving competition. Sherman became the second diver and first freshman in program history to compete at the NCAA Zones. Sherman broke two Holy Cross diving records as a freshman.

#6 – WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY RUNS TO A PROGRAM BEST

Women’s cross country placed third at the Patriot League Championship on Oct. 21, good for its best finish since 2001. The Crusaders then earned a program-best second place finish at the ECAC Championship on Nov. 19.

#7 – FIELD HOCKEY EARNS TOURNAMENT BERTH

Field hockey earned its first Patriot League Tournament bid since 2006 by finishing in third place in the Patriot League standings. The Crusaders' nine overall wins and three Patriot League victories were their most since the 2006 season.

#8 – MEN'S VARSITY FOUR ONE OF THE NATION’S BEST

The men’s rowing varsity four placed fourth in the nation at the IRA National Championship Regatta on June 3-5. This was the Crusaders' best finish in an event at the IRAs since 1983 when the varsity four placed third.

#9 – BASEBALL ADVANCES TO PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

Baseball advanced to the Championship Series of the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth time in school history. The Crusaders went 30-27 overall and 14-6 in the Patriot League. It was the third time in program history the Crusaders posted 30 wins or more.

#10 – WOMEN’S TENNIS AT THE PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT

Women’s tennis earned a match victory at the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Lafayette, 4-2, in the first round on April 21 in Annapolis, Md. The team also posted its most victories for a season in four years.
