Swimming And Diving Takes A Trip To Florida
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams are on their annual team trip to Florida this week. The teams will be taking part in various practices and excercises each day, while also taking some time to enjoy the warm weather. Follow this blog each day for a new update from each class!
Day Nine - Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 | Freshmen Men
We began the ninth day of our winter training trip by traversing to the pool for morning practice. All were eager to complete the annual timed mile, so our warmup flew by. When we were finished with the mile, we felt very accomplished and were eager to fill our stomachs with a well-deserved breakfast.
After breakfast, much of the team converged on the beach for a windy beach day, which was not very conducive to volleyball, albeit the games were still very intense. We rode some big waves, ran from jellyfish and relaxed for the final full beach day.
Once again, 2:00 p.m. hit, and the team met back at the pool for our final afternoon practice. This practice was mainly comprised of a short warmup and then a long and tiring set of heats. Afterwards, everyone was eager to relax later for the final night. We ended the day with a groovy team dinner at Mulligans by the Beach and split off into our respective teams for our final night together.
Overall, we really enjoyed our first training trip and feel as if we’re in a good position for the rest of the season and excited for next year’s trip.

Day Eight - Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 | Freshmen Women
We began the eighth day of our winter training trip by making our way to the pool for morning practice. We started by doing our new stretching routine, and then hopped in the pool just as the sun began to rise. After a long warm up, we broke off into distance freestyle and IM lanes for a tough but rewarding main set. After morning practice and being fully awakened at this point, some of us went back to the hotel, while others ventured off to a restaurant on the beach for a much needed breakfast.
After breakfast, much of the team reconvened at the beach for a windy, yet relaxing beach day. We body surfed in some extremely big waves, played beach volleyball and worked on our tans.
As 2:00 p.m. rolled around, the team met back at the pool for afternoon practice. This practice, mostly comprised of sprinting and some relays from the blocks. It left us tired and sore but still in good spirits. We ended the day with stroke lane dinners and headed to bed early, eager to be well rested for our last day of doubles in Florida.

Day Seven - Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 | Junior Men
The team headed to the pool only to discover that it was 55 degrees outside. We proceeded to do an extended morning warm up by doing 110 push-ups, 10 minutes of abs, lunges around the pool and of course how could we forget sprints. We concluded the first hour with stretching and then "Splash!" We jumped right into the pool. Fortunately for us, today wasn't going be as rough of a practice as the other days because we had an exhibition meet this afternoon.
The races consisted of stroke relays and the grand finale of 4x100 IM. After our victory, we went to the beach while we displayed our great volleyball skills. Following our sandy showers, we got pizza and watched Alabama fall to Clemson in the national championship game. We could not have gotten through this day without the help of our coaches that organized the meet and our teammates that worked so hard to come out with a “W."

Day Six- Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 | Junior Women
On this day, we braved the cold and windy morning weather to do a dry land and swim workout. We started our practice with a few dry land exercises including abs, lunges and stretching. Even though it was pretty cold, we all got warmed up and jumped into the pool. Our coaches gave us an extra hour to sleep in this morning, which was awesome, and we were all well-rested and ready to attack the workout this morning!
During our afternoon practice, we all focused on our individual strokes. The sun was shining and we were able to soak up its rays while working hard to prepare for our meet tomorrow.
Our coaches met with both the women’s and the men’s teams to get us all psyched up for our relay meet against Monmouth tomorrow!
The women’s team had a delicious team dinner to carbo-load for our meet. Tonight, both teams are relaxing and resting and cannot wait for the rest of our week!
Day Five - Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 | Sophomore Men
Ring ring ring! Our alarms woke us at 6:05 a.m. for morning practice, and we ambled over to the pool. Our silhouettes were highlighted by the heat lightening flashing across the sky. The pool deck was a flurry of activity as the team stretched and prepared their bodies for practice. It was time to go to work. The set was an IM set and a combination of mid-distance and sprints, which proved to be a great workout. After practice, the boys headed to breakfast at the team's favorite spot, Benny's on the Beach. Following that, we hit the beach for some volleyball. Unfortunately, our game was cut short by some rolling thunderstorms that thankfully dissipated in time for our afternoon practice. It was time to go to work again. Afternoon practice was focused on sprinting and loosening up our tight muscles. Dinner was served up hot over at Mulligan's as we ate with the sophomore class. We crawled into bed that night and fell asleep satisfied and ready for more the next morning.

Day Four - Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 | Sophomore Women
We started off winter training this morning before the sun rose with our first 6:30 a.m. practice. Even though we were a little tired from flying in the night before, we were eager to get outside and start training in the sunshine! We had a long freestyle set this morning to get our blood pumping, and after breakfast, we headed straight to the beach.
Coach Parenteau and Coach Barlok brought lots of beach games for the team to enjoy in between practices. It was a beautiful beach day, and we all enjoyed the sunlight.
Our afternoon practice consisted of some stroke work and sprinting. Even though we were tired from the late night and early morning, everyone had a positive attitude about a great first day, and we are looking forward to the rest of the week!
The Sophomore Girls
Days One-Three - Jan. 3-5, 2017 | Senior Women
Hello from Worcester! The swim team returned to campus on Tuesday, January 3, eager to jump back into the pool. We were greeted on deck by the jolly smile of our head coach, Barry Parenteau, ready to get us into tip-top shape for the second half of our season. After a day of traveling back to campus, we were grateful to only have one practice to stretch out. Although campus is pretty quiet at this time, it is so great to be back with our teammates.
On Wednesday we faced our first day of double practices. In the morning we focused on longer distance freestyle, while in the afternoon we broke up into stroke groups. The double practices definitely took a toll on us, and we were more than happy to be able settle down for dinner at Kimball, and reap the benefits of an all-you-can eat dining hall. Many of us settled into our rooms early, watching Netflix then heading to bed knowing we had a busy travel day ahead.
The girl’s team rose and shined on Thursday morning to get ready for Florida. The energy levels were high, as we jammed out to a great Beyoncé playlist put on by our lift coach Will. One final practice before we jetted off to Florida was more than enough for us. With the temperature being 22 degrees, but feeling like eight degrees, we were more than happy to be heading to the warmer Florida weather.
Catch up with you when we are down South!
