WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross Director of Athletics Nathan Pine is pleased to announce the hiring of Nick Smith as Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations. Smith will begin his tenure with Holy Cross in January 2018.

Smith joins the Crusaders after spending more than five years as Director of Athletics at Worcester-based Assumption College. At Holy Cross, he will be a member of the athletics senior staff with primary responsibilities of leading all revenue generation and extending the brand and messaging of Holy Cross Athletics through private philanthropy, corporate support, ticket sales, marketing efforts and strategic communications. Smith will also assume sport supervision duties of five varsity programs.

“We are excited to welcome Nick to Holy Cross,” said Pine. “I have been impressed from afar by the job Nick has done leading the athletic department at Assumption, and we look forward to the addition of his experience, knowledge and leadership to our team. He will be a great addition to our staff and our culture.”

Smith oversaw 24 NCAA Division II varsity programs and more than 540 student-athletes in his five years at the helm with the Greyhounds, where he has led the athletics department to a number of impressive advancements. At Assumption, Smith orchestrated a dramatic jump in philanthropy and fundraising, as well as continuous improvements in the Greyhounds’ Northeast-10 Conference President’s Cup standings. During his tenure, Assumption teams have won six conference championships and made nine NCAA tournament appearances while also excelling in the classroom with an Academic Success Rate ranked in the nation’s top-15 for seven-straight years.

Smith is a member of the Assumption College Enrollment Management Division’s Senior Management Team and has served on the NE-10 Executive Committee since 2013, chairing the group in 2017. He is also a member of the DII National Football Committee, where he has served as a co-chair of the Regional Advisory Committee for three years.

“I am very excited to join the Holy Cross community, and I would like to thank Director of Athletics Nathan Pine for this opportunity,” said Smith. “Holy Cross has seen tremendous growth over the last few years, and I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the department’s future success.”

Prior to arriving at Assumption, Smith spent nine years at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., serving in a variety of roles, including assistant and associate director of athletics. With the Skyhawks, Smith managed all aspects of the department’s budget and provided administrative oversight for multiple varsity programs. Smith has also spent time working with the Contemporary Services Corporation at Gillette Stadium and at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.

A 2000 graduate of Southern New Hampshire University, Smith earned his Bachelor of Sport Management and was a four-year member of the men’s lacrosse team, serving as captain in his senior season. He went on to earn his Master of Business Administration from Bryant University in 2002.
