Men's Lacrosse Patriot League Preseason Poll Announced
WORCESTER, MASS. – The Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team has been picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll as voted on by coaches and media relations directors from around the league.
2016 Patriot League champion Loyola (Md.) was selected as the preseason favorite with 128 points and 16 first-place votes, while Navy was second with 112 points and two first-place votes. Army West Point (96 points) and Bucknell (91 points) followed in third and fourth, respectively. Boston University (63 points) was fifth, Lehigh (61 points) was sixth, Colgate (46 points) was seventh, the Crusaders (35 points) were eighth and Lafayette (16 points) was ninth.
Pat Spencer of Loyola Maryland was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Chris Fennell of Navy was selected the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
The top six teams as determined by the regular season will qualify for the Patriot League postseason tournament with the top two seeds earning byes to the semifinals. The No. 3 seed will host No. 6 and No. 4 will host No. 5 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 25. The top seed will host the semifinals on Friday, April 28, and the championship on Sunday, April 30. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament with an automatic bid.
The Crusaders will kick off the season at home against Providence on Saturday, February 11 at 2:05 p.m. Last year, the Crusaders qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in program history. The Crusaders’ three Patriot League wins tied the program record. Holy Cross won three straight Patriot League games for the first time in program history. The senior class led the Crusaders to their most Patriot League wins during a four-year span in program history. The team’s 132 caused turnovers set a school record and the Crusaders’ 8.8 caused turnovers per game ranked sixth nationally.
