Crusaders To Travel To #19 BU; Look To Clinch Home Tournament Game

The Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team (4-8, 4-3 Patriot League), which has qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the second straight year, will conclude the regular season when it plays at Turnpike Trophy rival No. 19 Boston University (10-3, 4-3 Patriot League) in a Patriot League matchup on Friday, April 21. Here is what you need to know as the Crusaders conclude the regular season and look to secure a home quarterfinal game.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

 

  • Holy Cross will travel to Nickerson Field to take on No. 19 Boston University on Friday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. The game can be seen on the Patriot League Network. Go here to watch the game.
  • Holy Cross and Boston University are tied for third place in the Patriot League standings at 4-3. With a victory the Crusaders will be the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, April 25 versus either Boston University, Lehigh or Navy. With a loss, the Crusaders will be the No. 5 seed and play at Navy.
  • The Crusaders’ four Patriot League victories this season are the most in program history. The Crusaders posted three Patriot League wins the past two seasons (2015 and 2016).
  • The Crusaders are 2-1 all-time versus the Terriers and have won two straight in the series. Last year, the Crusaders defeated BU, 11-7, on April 22. The winner advanced to the Patriot League Tournament as the Crusaders secured their first ever trip to the tournament with the victory. Holy Cross also defeated BU, 12-10, on April 17, 2015. The Terriers won the first-ever matchup with a 9-8 victory on April 19, 2014.

CRUSADERS QUALIFY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT PL TOURNAMENT

  • The Crusaders have qualified for the Patriot League Tournament. This will be the Crusaders second straight trip to the Patriot League Tournament. Last year, Holy Cross earned its first-ever bid to the tournament.
  • With a win versus BU, the Crusaders will secure their first-ever home Patriot League Tournament game and will be the No. 3 seed. Holy Cross would host either BU, Lehigh or Navy in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, April 25. If BU wins, the Crusaders will be the No. 5 seed and play at Navy.

TURNPIKE TROPHY

  • The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers is part of the Turnpike Trophy competition. Go here for the schedule and results of the Turnpike Trophy.
  • There will be a MVP named after the game.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which has the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • After this game, the next Turnpike Trophy match-up will be on April 21-23, when the women’s golf teams compete at the Patriot League Tournament.

SENIOR CLASS

 

  • This year’s senior class has led the Crusaders to their most Patriot League wins during a four-year span in program history with 11. As sophomores this class contributed to the team earning their first two victories versus top 10 nationally ranked opponents with wins versus No. 8 Loyola Maryland and No. 9 Army West Point. The Crusaders were also ranked No. 19 in the country earning their first ever national ranking. Then as juniors, Holy Cross qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time ever. And then this season, the Crusaders have recorded their most ever Patriot League victories and have qualified for the tournament for the second straight year.

ORTLIEB WITH TWO BIG GAME WINNERS

  • Senior Jack Ortlieb has two career game-winning goals. Both game-winning goals have clinched the two Patriot League Tournament bids for the program.
  • Last year, he netted the game winner in the 11-7 victory versus Boston University on April 22 to secure the team’s first-ever bid to the Patriot League Tournament, while this season he broke a 11-11 tie with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter for the 12-11 victory versus Colgate on April 15.

LUX WITH 105 CAREER POINTS

 

  • Senior Kevin Lux has 63 goals, 42 assists and 105 career points. He is the 23rd Crusader in program history to record 100 points.
  • He leads the team this season with 18 assists and is tied for first with 32 points. His 14 goals are fourth on the team. His 1.50 assists per game are sixth in the Patriot League and 43rd nationally.

 CRUSADERS LEAD THE PATRIOT LEAGUE IN CAUSED TURNOVERS

  • The Crusaders lead the Patriot League and are seventh nationally with 9.08 caused turnovers per game.
  • Junior Henry Lilly and sophomore Matt Farrell are tied for eighth in the Patriot League and 24th in the nation with 1.50 caused turnovers per game. Farrell is 10th in the Patriot League and 44th in the nation with 4.17 ground balls per game. Freshman Mike Martens is 46th nationally with 4.10 ground balls per game.

KIRKPATRICK LEADING THE TEAM IN GOALS

  • Senior Sean Kirkpatrick leads the team with 23 goals and is tied for first with 32 points. His nine assists are second.
  • His 1.92 goals per game are tied for sixth in the Patriot League and 73rd nationally.
  • Kirkpatrick has five hat tricks this season.
