Crusaders Set To Take On #17 Loyola Maryland In PL Semifinals

The No. 5 seed Holy Cross men's lacrosse team (5-9, 4-4 Patriot League) will travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on No. 1 seed and No. 17-nationally ranked Loyola Maryland (8-5, 6-2 Patriot League) in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament on the CBS Sports Network on Friday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m. Here is what you need to know as the Crusaders prepare for their first-ever appearance in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Holy Cross will travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on No. 17 Loyola Maryland on Friday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcasted nationally on the CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and Evan Washburn on the call. Channel Finder
  • Holy Cross is the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and earned its first-ever Patriot League Tournament victory with the 11-7 win at No. 4 seed Navy in the quarterfinals on April 25.
  • The winner will play either No. 2 seed Army West Point or No. 3 seed Boston University in the championship game on April 30 at 1:00 p.m.
  • Loyola won the regular season matchup between the two teams by a 16-9 score on March 4.
  • This is the Crusaders second appearance in the Patriot League Tournament and their first in the semifinals. Last year, Holy Cross qualified for the tournament for the first time in program history and fell to Bucknell in the quarterfinals.
  • The Greyhounds, who joined the league in 2014, have won two Patriot League Tournament championships (2014 & 2016). Loyola won the 2012 NCAA Division I national championship.

CRUSADERS EARN FIRST-EVER PL TOURNAMENT VICTORY

  • Senior Kevin Lux tallied two goals and four assists for six points, while senior Sean Kirkpatrick posted four goals and one assist for five points as the Crusaders defeated Navy, 11-7, On April 25 in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals.
  • This was the first Patriot League Tournament win in program history for the Crusaders.
  • This was the Crusaders' second-ever win over Navy, as the Midshipmen now lead the all-time series 13-2. Holy Cross previously defeated Navy by a 7-5 score on March 17, 2013 at Citi Field.

CRUSADERS SET PROGRAM RECORD FOR PATRIOT LEAGUE WINS

  • The Crusaders' four Patriot League regular season victories were the most in program history.
  • The Crusaders posted three Patriot League wins the past two seasons (2015 and 2016).

SENIOR CLASS MAKES MAJOR IMPACT

 

  • This year's senior class has led the Crusaders to their most Patriot League wins during a four-year span in program history with 11. As sophomores this class contributed to the team earning their first two victories versus top 10 nationally ranked opponents with wins versus No. 8 Loyola Maryland and No. 9 Army West Point. The Crusaders were also ranked No. 19 in the country earning their first ever national ranking.
  • Then as juniors, Holy Cross qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time ever. And then this season, the Crusaders have recorded their most ever Patriot League victories, qualified for the tournament for the second straight year and won their first-ever Patriot League Tournament game.

LUX EARNS ALL-LEAGUE HONORS

 

  • Senior Kevin Lux earned second team All-Patriot League honors, as voted on by the conferences' coaches. This is the first time that Lux has received All-Patriot League accolades.
  • Lux has played in all 14 games this season as he leads the team with 26 assists and tied for first with 42 points, while he is tied for third with 16 goals. His 1.86 assists per game are third in the Patriot League and 21st nationally.
  • For his career, Lux has 115 career points with 65 goals and 50 assists. He is the 23rd Crusader in program history to record 100 points.

CRUSADERS LEAD THE PATRIOT LEAGUE IN CAUSED TURNOVERS

  • The Crusaders lead the Patriot League with 126 caused turnovers.
  • Junior Henry Lilly and sophomore Matt Farrell are tied for seventh in the Patriot League and 27th nationally with 1.43 caused turnovers per game. Freshman Mike Martens is 44th nationally with 4.25 ground balls per game.

KIRKPATRICK LEADING THE TEAM IN GOALS

  • Senior Sean Kirkpatrick leads the team with 30 goals and is tied for first with 42 points. His 12 assists are second.
  • His 30 goals are fourth in the Patriot League.
  • Kirkpatrick has seven hat tricks this season.

LILLY NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE TEAM

  • Junior Henry Lilly was named to the 2017 Academic All-Patriot League team. He is one of just 12 men's lacrosse student-athletes from around the league to earn this honor. This is the first time in his career that he has been selected to the Academic All-Patriot League team.
  • In order to be eligible for the the award, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.20 and be a key starter or key player in his sport.
  • Lilly is a political science major with a 3.34 grade-point average. Playing in all 14 games this season, he leads the team with 20 caused turnovers.
  • Lilly has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for all three of his seasons with the Crusaders. 

ORTLIEB WITH TWO BIG GAME WINNERS

  • Senior Jack Ortlieb has two career game-winning goals. Both game-winning goals have clinched the two Patriot League Tournament bids for the program.
  • Last year, he netted the game winner in the 11-7 victory versus Boston University on April 22 to secure the team's first-ever bid to the Patriot League Tournament, while this season he broke a 11-11 tie with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter for the 12-11 victory versus Colgate on April 15.

THE SERIES WITH LOYOLA MARYLAND

  • The Crusaders are 1-3 all-time against the Greyhounds.
  • Holy Cross earned a 13-12 win in the 2015 season, while Loyola won 16-4 in 2014, 10-9 in 2016 and 16-9 in 2017.
