Biography
Tom Dowd did not play a varsity
sport at Holy Cross, but was elected to the Hall of Fame for his
support of the Crusaders after graduation. A nationally known
and a very sought after dinner speaker, Tom served as the
toastmaster for the Varsity Club Hall of Fame dinner for several
years.
After teaching physics at Holy Cross for three years (1932-35),
Dowd served as the athletic director and football coach at Loyola
Prep in Baltimore for several years. Dowd was the traveling
secretary for the Boston Red Sox from 1945 to 1968, and then served
as the team's director of community relations. A member of many
organizations, Tom was also a National Football League official for
16 years (1941-1957) and also a member of the Eastern College
Football Officials Association.
Holy Cross honored Tom in 1968 with its coveted “In Hoc
Signo” Award for long and meritorious service. He passed away
in 1976.
