McGovern took over the starting slot as a free safety for the Crusader football team early in his freshman year and started every game thereafter. He had three interceptions as a freshman, four more his sophomorer year, six additional steals as a junior and a nation-leading 11 as a senior -- setting a school record in the process. When he graduated he ranked second in career interceptions at 24, behind fellow Hall of Famer John Provost ‘75. As a junior, he was chosen first team All ECAC and Honorable Mention All American, while his fantastic senior year garned the following awards: . All New England (first team); All ECAC (first team); Kodak All American (first team); and A.P. All American (first team). Co-captain of the 1984 squad, McGovernl played on teams which compiled an overall record of 31-13-1, including the 1983 Lambert Cup champions. After graduation he pursued a career in collegiate coaching.
