2007-2008 Community Service Activities

At the College of the Holy Cross, the athletic department prides itself on giving back to the local community. Student-athletes, coaches and other members of the athletic staff participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Below is a listing of activities where Holy Cross athletic teams were involved in community service projects during the 2007-2008 school year.

Baseball

  • November 30, 2007 - Matt Perry, Chris Blanchard and Coach DiCenzo attended Career Day at Charlton Middle School.
  • December 3, 2007 - Ryan George, John Sills, Matt Perry and Brian Shapiro spent a few hours unloading trucks of donated toys for the Toys for Tots program at the local Salvation Army branch.
  • December 4, 2007 - Chris Blanchard, Matt O'Brien and Steve Anderson spent a few hours unloading trucks of donated toys for the Toys for Tots program at the local Salvation Army branch.
  • April 9, 2008 - Coach DiCenzo and a few players took part in a Shadow Day for Hudson High School.

Men's Basketball

  • February 2, 2008 - The team hosted their annual Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • April 16, 2008 - Alex Vander Baan and Kyle Cruze took part in Reading Day at the Pakachoag School.

Women's Basketball

  • September 23, 2007 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • October 31, 2007 - Coach Gibbons and members of the team went trick-or-treating at the Mercy Centre.
  • December 1, 2007 - The team hosted their annual Post-Game Polaroid Event. Donations raised were given to the American Cancer Society.
  • January 7, 2008 - The team held their annual clinic and basketball game at the Mercy Centre.
  • January 12, 2008 - The team hosted their annual Post-Game Clinic.
  • January 26, 2008 - The team hosted their annual Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • February 16, 2008 - The team hosted Think Pink at the game to benefit breast cancer research.
  • March 29, 2008 - The team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day.
  • April 16, 2008 - Coach Gibbons, Christy Cushnie and Alyssa May took part in Reading Day at the Julia Bancroft School.

Cheerleading

  • October 22, 2007 - The squad helped run the annual Pre-Game Kids' Day Clinic prior to the football game.
  • March 29, 2008 - Members of the squad took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day.
  • Each of the squad members maintained relationships as a big sister in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program of Central Mass.

Men's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • April 22, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Relay for Disaster Relief.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • Members of the team took part in the Habitat for Humanity and Appalachia projects.

Women's Cross Country / Track & Field

  • September 23, 2007 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • September 29, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team spent a few hours on Wednesday afternoons playing with the children at the Friendly House.

Field Hockey

  • March 29, 2008 - The team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team took part in the Appalachia project.

Football

  • September 22, 2007 - Members of the team hosted the annual Pre-Game Kids' Day Clinic.
  • March 29, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day. They spent a few hours cleaning up a few local parks in the city.
  • Each Friday before a home game, members of the team visited various schools doing Trivia for Tickets to help get the community more involved with HC Football.
  • Members of the team took part in the YMCA After School Program on Monday afternoons at 2 local middle schools.
  • Members of the team helped out with the After School Program at the Nativity school a few days a week.
  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

Men's Ice Hockey

  • September 23, 2007 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • January 3, 2008 - Members of he team split up and visited various schools doing Trivia for Tickets to help get the community more involved with Holy Cross Hockey.
  • January 5, 2008 - The team entertained a handful of the children from the DEAFinitley Hockey program in the locker room after the game.
  • January 19, 2008 - The team hosted a Post-Game Autograph Session.
  • March 29, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day. Some spent a few hours cleaning up a local park and some held skating lessons for the children at the Lake Ave. rink.
  • Members of team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate Program on campus for deaf kids in the community.
  • Members of the team took part in Crusaders for Kids, a Big Brother program set up by the players to bring inner city kids to other sporting events on campus as well as in the community. This year trip included movies, Worcester Shark games, bowling and The Globetrotters! 

Women's Ice Hockey

  • September 23, 2007 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • March 29, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day. Some participated at the Green Island Community area in a field day at Crompton Park, some held skating lessons for the children at the Lake Ave. rink and some helped out at the Olympic Disabled Hockey Games at the Marlboro Rink.
  • The team collected monetary donations as well as supplies for the Friendly House Baby Drive as people attended their games.
  • The team held a food drive for the Worcester County Deputy Sheriff's Association to help the less fortunate at a local Price Chopper. 
  • Members of team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate Program on campus for deaf kids in the community.
  • Members of the team spent some afternoons at the Boys and Girls Club.

Men's Lacrosse

  • September 29, 2007 - Members of the team took part in the annual Rodman Ride for Kids to raise money for children-at-risk charities.
  • In memory of a former co-captain who passed away, every member of the team volunteered as John's Brothers ... mentors with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, matched with students at an ethnically diverse inner city school (Canterbury School).

Women's Lacrosse

  • September 23, 2007 - The team took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • Members of the team took part in after school tutoring at the Heard Street School.

Men's Rowing

  • April 22, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Relay for Disaster Relief.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Women's Rowing

  • October 4, 2007 - 29 members of the team participated in the Light the Night Walk on the Boston Common. This walk supported Mary Dixon '08, a former member of the team that was diagnosed with stage-two lymphoma.
  • April 22, 2008 - Members of the team took part in the annual Relay for Disaster Relief.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Men's Soccer

  • April 18, 2008 - Coach Comrie and members of the team assisted with the Kids to College program, which is a collaborative, early higher education awareness program developed by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts and the Higher Education Information Center.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team assisted SGA with the annual Take Your Child to Work Day.

Women's Soccer

  • October 14, 2007 - The team held a pre-game clinic for a local youth soccer team. 
  • March 29, 2008 - The team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day.
  • The team maintained their relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Softball

  • September 16, 2007 - The team took part in a Walk for Autism.
  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving

  • March 29, 2008 - The team took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day.
  • The swimming and diving teams hosted their annual Worcester County Swim League Competition.
  • The team took part in the annual DEAFinitley Swimming program, providing one-on-one swimming lessons for deaf kids in the community.

Men's and Women's Tennis

  • September 23, 2007 - Members of both teams took part in the annual UMASS Walk for Cancer.
  • March 29, 2008 - Members of both teams took part in the annual Holy Cross Cares Day, with the women's captain, Meg Moran, serving as one of the director's of the entire event.
  • Members of both teams volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.

Volleyball

  • Members of the team volunteered with SPUD throughout the school year.
  • Members of the team took part in after school tutoring at the Heard Street School.
