Community Service Activities
At the College of the Holy Cross, the athletic department prides itself on giving back to the local community. Student-athletes, coaches and other members of the athletic staff participate in a variety of activities throughout the year.
Below is a listing of activities where Holy Cross athletic teams have been involved in community service projects during the 2011-2012 school year.
• 2011-12: Members of the team maintained their
relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters
program.
• Fall ‘11: Members of the team visited with the
families at Sherry’s House as part of Team
Impact, a program set up with Sherry’s House in an
effort to improve the quality of life for children facing
life-threatening illnesses across the northeast by creating
unparalleled team based support systems.
• 9/15/11: Members of the team volunteered for the United
Way Day of Caring by cleaning up areas of the Nativity School

• 10/28/11: Alex Maldonado, Pat Puentes, Andrew Barry and
Coach DiCenzo took part in Reading Day at the Maple Street

• 10/30/11: Members of the team took part in the
Light the Night Walk for the Lymphoma Society. This
event showed their support in taking steps to help Cure Cancer.
• 11/7/11: Pitcher Matt Croglio volunteered for Catholic
Charities, loading a truck of food at the Worcester County
Food Bank and unloading it at a Worcester area pantry.
• 11/9/11: Pat Puentes, Chris Sintetos, Nate Koneski, Tom
Marra and Coach DiCenzo took part in Reading Day at the
Worcester Arts Magnet School in Worcester. Photo Gallery
• 1/9/12: Coach DiCenzo and Coach Rakowski
volunteered at Catholic Charities, loading a truck of food
at the Worcester County Food Bank and unloading it at a Worcester
area pantry.
• 4/4/12: The team hosted Team Impact Night at their
baseball game. They honored their 6 year old ‘draft
pick’ and cancer survivor Sean Rakip as he threw out the
honorary first pitch.
• 4/28/12: The team hosted Pediatric Cancer Awareness
Day at their baseball game. They honored 10 year old
cancer survivor Chris Poplawski as he threw out the honorary first

• 4/4/12: Mike Cavataio and Dee Goens took part in
Reading Day at Pakachoag School.
• 4/14/12: 6 members of the team took part in the City

• 4/21/12: The team hosted a Think Pink Meet and raised money for breast cancer awareness.

with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
• 9/25/11: Members of the team took part in the UMASS
Walk for Cancer.
• 4/21/12: The team hosted a Think Pink Meet and
raised money for breast cancer awareness.

relationship with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters
program.
• 10/29/11: The team hosted a Pink Zone game to
benefit breast cancer research.
• 12/6/11: Members of the team delivered Project Night
Night packages to a local shelter. These packages contain a
blanket, stuffed animal and age-appropriate book for

• 3/24/12: Members of the team took part in the annual
Holy Cross Cares Day cleaning Cookson Park.

the team visited various schools doing Trivia for Tickets
to help get the community more involved with HC Football.
• 10/15/11: Members of the team hosted the annual

Marrow Testing Drive.

for Kids, a big brother type of program set up by the players
to bring inner city kids to other sporting events on campus as well
as in the community.
• 12/10/11: The team hosted a Camouflage Jersey Game
to benefit The Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund.

• 2011-12: Brandon Nunn initiated the Power Play Points
for PINK promotion. All home power play goals raised
money through pledges from the community. The promotion
raised over $4,000 for breast cancer research!

Mission game to raise awareness for the less fortunate and
raise funds to provide scholarships for students to participate in
humanitarian missions in foreign countries.

• December ’11: The team made Christmas Stockings for
the Boys and Girls Club in Worcester
• 4/14/12: Members of the team took part in Holy
Cross’ Relay for Life.
• 3/24/12: The team participated in Holy Cross Cares
Day.
