Opportunity Knocks

Katie Falkowski doesn’t choose to dwell on the fact that
she’s coaching a sport she’s never played. Instead, she
concentrates on the similarities between her new role as a member
of the St. Thomas More football team and the lessons she learned
growing up playing ice hockey in Massachusetts. . .

Tommy Heinsohn, the colorful analyst for Comcast SportNet New
England's coverage of the Boston Celtics, earlier this week
displayed his life outside basketball. Heinsohn's paintings were
part of an art show from which a portion of the proceeds will be
donated to the Helen J. Weiss Heinsohn Scholarship fund. Named for
Heinsohn's late wife, the fund supports and encourages art
education for children and young adults. . .
Family ties bond Misi and coach who gives
him strength
September 25, 2010 * By Mike Berardino * Fort Lauderdale

They had no idea of their connection. Not a single clue. Not
before the NFL Draft, when
the Miami Dolphins were
preparing to take Koa Misi in the second round as Jason Taylor's successor. Not during
rookie minicamp, when the Utah product showed up and began in
earnest the process of reshaping his body to outside linebacker
standards in a 3-4 NFL defense. . .

Injuries are always part of the game. Holy Cross senior defensive
back Pat Haidon sure knows a thing or two about injuries. Haidon
tore his left ACL during his sophomore season and seven months
later tore the exact same ACL. . .
Holy Cross hopes to learn from

Tom Gilmore is an ultra-competitive person who hates losing, so no
Holy Cross defeat sits well with him. But Saturday’s 31-7
setback at UMass was particularly upsetting and it wasn’t
just because of the final score. “When you go out and compete
there’s always the possibility of losing,” Gilmore
said.
Crusader comeback
September 11, 2010 * By Craig Larson * Boston
Globe
For a split second, there was a pause. Sean Lamkin was breathing
it all in last Saturday at Fitton Field, awaiting the whistle and
the first snap of the season. A moment, he says, that was
“pretty surreal.’’ Then the Holy Cross fifth-year
senior, with nearly a year’s worth of aggression and
anticipation penned up in his 6-foot-1-inch, 225-pound frame,
unleashed a hit on Howard back Jarren Brown. . .
Confident UMass has Cross to
bear
September 11, 2010 * By John Connolly * Boston
Herald
Holy Cross and UMass may be playing under the lights
tonight at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst but you can be sure Minutemen
coach Kevin Morris is wary of the glare and danger in
overconfidence that any big win can bring. UMass, which was picked
to finish eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association, stunned
then-No. 4 William & Mary, 27-23, in its season opener last
week. The win vaulted UMass to No. 18 in the FCS top 25. . .
UMass offense looks to run wild against
Crusaders
September 11, 2010 * By Matt Vautour * Daily Hampshire
Gazette
Among the encouraging things for the University of Massachusetts
football team from last week's 27-23 upset of then No. 4 William
& Mary, was how efficient the offense looked despite having so
many new faces in the lineup. Particularly sharp was the play of
the Minutemen's no-huddle offense. UMass has used the hurry-up
approach in other seasons, but not as regularly as it did Saturday.
William & Mary seemed caught of guard by it. . .
Griffin, UMass to test Holy Cross
September 10, 2010 * By Jennifer Toland * Worcester
Telegram & Gazette
Holy Cross coach Tom Gilmore thought John Griffin was a good
player last year when the Crusaders saw him at Northeastern.
Griffin, the former Oakmont Regional High running back who is now
at UMass, will present the Crusaders’ defense with a whole
new challenge tomorrow night at McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst.

It’s a long way from Schaghticoke to Saks Fifth Avenue, but
singer Nikki Dessingue has made it. The Rensselaer County native, a
member of the Boston-based band Stereo Telescope, will take the
stage tonight at the Boston satellite of the New York shopping
institution for its Fashion’s Night Out celebration, an event
honoring the beginning of New York Fashion Week. . .
Fresh off upset, UMass football hosts Holy
Cross
September 10, 2010 * By Matt Vautour * Daily Hampshire
Gazette
University of Massachusetts football coach Kevin Morris was
curious how his team would react this week preparing for Saturday's
6 p.m. game against Holy Cross at McGuirk Stadium. Not only was it
coming off of Saturday's upset of then No. 4 William & Mary,
but the student body returned to campus and classes started. On top
of that the much anticipated Michigan game looms on Sept. 18,
presenting ample potential for loss of focus. But the Minuteman
coach was pleased with what he saw. . .

straight Saturday against Holy Cross
September 9, 2010 * By Ron Chimelis * Springfield

Anthony Nelson always admired the winning football tradition at
the University of Massachusetts. Now he's committed to maintaining
it. "They were successful, year in and year out,'' said Nelson, a
senior wide receiver who came to UMass this year after his previous
school, Hofstra, dropped football. . .

Lamkin returns ready for Holy
Cross
September 3, 2010 * By Jennifer Toland * Worcester
Telegram & Gazette
Opposing offenses better be ready, because Holy Cross senior
linebacker Sean Lamkin plans on making up for lost time this
season. Lamkin tore the anterior crucial ligament in his left knee
in the first quarter of HC's third game of 2009 and missed the rest
of the season. Almost 12 months later, Lamkin, an All-Patriot
League selection in 2008, is back to lead the Holy Cross defense. .

New leaders at Holy Cross
September 3, 2010 * By Robert Mays * Boston

Practice is over on this hot August evening, and Holy
Cross’s trio of quarterbacks walks across the field.
They’ve been told that someone wants to ask them some
questions, and they already know the subject matter. Dominic
Randolph, the most prolific passer in Holy Cross history, is gone.

43 years with the Sox... and
counting
September 3, 2010 * By Marvin Pave * Boston
Globe
Sitting behind home plate at LeLacheur Park on a sultry
late-summer evening, Dick Berardino does not need a computer, or a
radar gun, to evaluate the fielding prowess or base-running habits
of the hometown Spinners. His instincts and experience as a minor
league manager for 21 seasons — including 1997 and 1998 in
Lowell — and as a player in the Yankees system for eight more
are all he needs. . .

Holy Cross football returns to WTAG (580 AM) tomorrow after
appearing on WWFX (100.1 FM, The Pike) the past two seasons, but

5 questions facing the
Crusaders
September 1, 2010 * By John Connolly * Boston
Herald
Coming off a 9-3 season, a trip
to the NCAA postseason playoffs, and its first Patriot League title
since 1991, Holy Cross football must now learn about life without
quarterback Dominic Randolph. The talented Randolph took career
totals of 1,131-of-1,786 passes for 13,455 yards and 117
touchdowns, to preseason with the New York Giants, leaving behind a
gaping hole. HC senior Ryan Taggart is heir apparent following a
preseason camp battle with juniors Mark Tolzien, and Kevin Watson.
