Softball beaten by George Mason on Saturday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Holy Cross softball team suffered a 9-1 loss to George Mason in nonconference action at the snowy George Mason Softball Complex.

Holy Cross moves to 2-3 with the defeat while the host Patriots improve to 6-2.

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Aly Rayle: W (1-1), 5.0 innings pitched, no-hitter, 10 strikeouts, unearned run.
  • Junior Megan Yurchick: L (1-2): 1.1 innings pitched, five earned runs, five hits allowed, two walks, two strikeouts.
IN RELIEF:
  • Freshman Sophia Roncone: 1.2 innings pitched, two earned runs, three hits allowed, strikeout.
  • Senior Peyton Morehouse: 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Jordan Anderson: 2-for-3, three RBI, two stolen bases, run scored.
  • Haley Taormina: 1-for-3, double, two RBI, stolen base, run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the bottom of the first, a double steal put runners at second and third with two away for the hosts. Yurchick got a groundball out to end the scoring threat.
  • The Patriots manufactured a run thanks to their speed on the base paths. Elyssa DeRosa singled to short then immediately stole second base. Sydney Blackwell dropped down a potential sacrifice bunt, reached on an error and a run came around to score. The bases were loaded with no outs and Yurchick got a fielder's choice force out to home to keep it a 1-0 lead. However, Anderson went the opposite away for a single increasing the margin to 3-0. George Mason kept tacking on runs to lead 7-0.
  • Senior Kari Jacobson crossed the plate in the top of the third coming all the way around after an errant throw down the right field line after a bunt attempt.
  • George Mason added two insurance runs to complete the run rule victory.
DUE UP:
  • The Crusaders end the weekend set with a doubleheader against George Mason tomorrow.
  • First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
