Softball falls twice Sunday at THE Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Holy Cross softball program squared off against a pair of Big East opponents and fell to Georgetown in eight innings 4-3 and to Creighton 5-2 Sunday in their final day of competition at THE Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla.

The setbacks drop the Crusaders to 3-8 through the early portion of their schedule while the Hoyas (3-14) and Blue Jays (9-9) better their records.
 
GAME ONE: HOYAS 4, CRUSADERS 3 (FINAL – 8 INN.):
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Julia Packer: ND, 2.1 innings, three hits allowed, two earned runs, three strikeouts.
  • Freshman Sophia Roncone: ND, 4.1 innings pitched three strikeouts, three walks, earned run, two hits allowed.
IN RELIEF:
  • Kayla Dunn: W, (1-1), 5.1 innings pitched, strikeouts, one hit allowed, walk, unearned run.
  • Junior Megan Yurchick: L (2-4), 3.1 innings pitched three strikeouts, one earned run.
  • Brooke Plonka: 0.1 innings pitched, two hits allowed, walk, one strikeout.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Dayanara Campos: 1-for-3, RBI, run scored, walk.
  • Gabby Park: 1-for-3, double, run scored.
  • Freshman Anna Brait: 2-for-4, double, RBI.
  • Senior Olivia Eckelman: 1-for-3, RBI, walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the bottom of the second, the Hoyas had runners at first and second with one out both reached base via free passes. Brait then made a sensational diving play to get the runner out at second base putting runners at the corners with two outs. Roncone promptly struck out the next hitter on three pitches to end the scoring threat.
  • Holy Cross got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as a two out infield single by Eckelman pushed the Crusaders ahead 1-0. Brait followed on the second pitch of the ensuing at bat lining an opposite field double into the left center field gap for the 2-0 edge.
  • A fielding error by the Crusaders resulted in the first run of the ballgame for Georgetown in the home half of the fifth.
  • In the top of the sixth, Holy Cross juiced the bases via a freshman Ali Sniegocki single, a fielding error and a walk. Dunn reentered the circle for the Hoyas and allowed no runs to score getting an infield fly, a strikeout and foul pop.
  • With two away in the bottom of the seventh, Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza rocketed a 2-0 pitch that banged off the third base bag into left field to bring home the runner from second base to tie the score.
  • A senior Bailey Bates sacrifice fly in the top of the eight pushed the Crusaders back in front 3-2. Georgetown won the game in the bottom of the eighth when Brittany Lew brought home the winning run via a single up the middle.
 
GAME TWO: BLUE JAYS 5, CRUSADERS 2 (FINAL):
 
STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Natalia Puchino: W, (3-2), 6.0 innings pitched, two earned runs, five hits allowed, two strikeouts.
  • Sophia Roncone: ND, 5.1 innings pitched, career-high seven strikeouts, four hits allowed, two earned runs, six walks.
IN RELIEF:
  • Megan Yurchick: L (2-5), 1.1 innings pitched, three earned runs, two hits allowed, walk.
  • Payton Akers: S (2), 1.0 innings pitched, strikeout.
  • Senior Audrey Gusel: 0.1 innings pitched.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Alyssa Gappa: 2-for-3, home run, two RBI, run scored.
  • Kailey Wilson: 1-for-3, RBI, run scored, walk.
  • Bailey Bates: 1-for-3, double, two RBI.
  • Anna Brait: 1-for-3.
  • Ali Sniegocki: 1-for-3, run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Roncone recorded the first six outs of the game all via the K as she established a new career-high in strikeouts.
  • The Crusaders struck first in the bottom of the fourth as Bates delivered a two out double the opposite way to right center to bring in Brait and Sniegocki who reached via singles.
  • In the fifth, Cayla Nielsen doubled to left center and Emma Rosonke was rolling around third base. Eckelman picked up the ball after a diving attempt and threw towards the plate, it was cut off by Roncone who tossed home to sophomore Emma Fong and she applied the tag for the second out of the inning.
  • Creighton leveled the margin in the top of the sixth. A single up the middle by pinch hitter Ella Dalton pulled her team within one 2-1. A sacrifice fly tied the contest at 2-2.
  • With two down in the away half of the seventh. Wilson singled through the middle for the 3-2 Blue Jay advantage. On the next pitch. Gappa cleared the bases with a round tripper to right center to increase the lead to 5-2.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross continues their spring break trip on Tuesday, Mar. 7 in Miami taking on Florida International for a doubleheader.
  • First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
