Baseball Places Nine On College Sports Madness' Preseason Team

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior outfielder Patrick Puentes (East Greenbush, N.Y.) headlines a group of nine Crusaders who were selected to College Sport Madness' Patriot League Preseason All-Conference Teams. Puentes was projected to be Field Player of the Year in the Patriot League. In addition, freshman catcher Connor Perry (Haverhill, Mass.) was selected for Freshman of the Year accolades.

Puentes and four other Crusaders were named to the preseason first team. In 2012, Puentes led the team with a .343 batting average as he had 46 hits and 28 runs scored. The outfielder appeared in 43 games, starting in 37 of them. Senior Tom Marra (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) was selected as a pitcher as he made 10 starts a season ago and posted a 4-3 record with a 3.27 ERA and 39 strikeouts.

Senior Alex Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was selected as an infielder, as the shortstop started in all 55 games in 2012. He had a .292 batting average and led the team with 62 hits and 14 stolen bases. Fourth-year Jordan Enos (Stockton, Calif.), selected as an infielder, played 47 games a season ago at first base and catcher. He finished the campaign with a .305 batting average, 46 hits, 23 RBIs and a team-best 11 doubles. Junior infielder Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) rounds out the first team candidates. In 2012, Ahmed batted .295 as he had 61 hits and team-highs of 39 runs scored and seven home runs.

Three Crusaders were also selected to the second team. Senior pitcher John Colella (Herndon, Va.) appeared in a Holy Cross record 29 games in 2012. He posted a 6-1 record with a team-best 2.32 ERA as well as a school-record 11 saves. Senior Stephen Wadsworth (Wayland, Mass.), who was selected as in infielder, played in 44 games in 2012. He tallied a .248 batting average with 37 hits and 27 RBIs. Junior outfielder Brandon Cipolla (Abington, Mass.) rounds out the second team selections. In 2012, he played in all 55 games and was second on the squad with a .323 batting average. He finished the season with 52 hits, 10 doubles, 28 RBIs and five home runs.

Holy Cross broke a school record with 33 wins in 2012, as it finished with a 33-22 overall record. The Crusaders hope to capture their first Patriot League Tournament Championship in 2013 as they fell one game short in 2012, losing to Army in the best-of-three series.
