WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross junior infielder/pitcher Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was named Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week for helping lead the Crusaders to six wins during the week of April 15-21. The Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year earns the award for the first time this season and second time in his career.
In a week where Holy Cross outscored its opponents 27-9, Ahmed led the Crusaders with a .533 batting average as he went 8-for-15 with two doubles, eight runs scored and one RBI. In helping Holy Cross to a four-game sweep over Lehigh this past weekend, Ahmed went 7-for-12 with six runs, two walks and a pair of stolen bases. The junior also pitched the series finale versus the Mountain Hawks and picked up his third victory of the season on the mound. He tossed six scoreless frames and allowed five hits and one walk, while fanning a pair.
For the season, Ahmed is batting .270 with 30 hits, 26 runs, two doubles and a pair of homers to go along with 23 RBIs. He also has set a career high with 10 stolen bases this year, which ranks second on the team. As a pitcher, Ahmed holds a 3-3 record with a 3.58 ERA and one save. He has pitched 27.2 innings and allowed 11 earned runs on 35 hits, while striking out a career-best 26 batters.
Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, April 23, when it travels to Sanford, Maine to take on Maine at 5:30 p.m.
