WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross junior third baseman and right-handed pitcher Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 20th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft as a left fielder. He becomes the second junior Crusader to be drafted since Drew Bigda went to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 39th round of the 2004 draft as John Pedrotty was also drafted as a junior in 2011. Ahmed was the 604th player taken overall in the draft. The Holy Cross baseball program has had at least one player drafted in each of the last four years.
Ahmed concluded his junior season with another solid performance on the mound, at the plate and in the infield. Playing in 45 games making 43 starts he batted .279 with 39 hits and a career-high 28 RBIs. His four homeruns ranked second in the Patriot League and he held a 4.11 ERA over 30.2 innings pitched. During his nine appearances and six starts throughout the season, Ahmed posted a 3-4 record. Before the season Collegiate Baseball named Ahmed Patriot League Player of the Year. Ahmed was named to the first team All-Patriot League at the conclusion of the season for the second consecutive season. As a co-captain, Ahmed helped lead the team to their first ever regular season Patriot League championship title.
In his career, Ahmed has played 134 games and holds a .283 batting average with 126 hits, 93 runs, 64 RBIs and 12 homeruns. On the mound, he holds a 5-5 record over 56.0 innings in 28 appearances. He holds a 4.66 career ERA while striking out 54 batters.
Ahmed is the first Holy Cross player to be drafted by the Dodgers organization. He is the fourth player in four years to be drafted out of Holy Cross and follows in the footsteps of Nate Koneski, who was chosen in the 19th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Pedrotty, who was chosen in the 13th round of the 2011 draft, and Matt Perry, who was chosen in the 41st round of the 2010 draft. Koneski and Pedrotty are currently in extended spring training for the Seattle Mariners farm system and the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system respectively.
