WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head men's basketball coach Milan Brown announced today that Robert Champion (Charlotte, N.C.) has signed a national letter of intent to attend Holy Cross and play for the Crusaders. Champion will be one of five players joining the Holy Cross program in the fall of 2013.
A 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard, Champion is currently completing a post-graduate year at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. During the 2012-2013 season, he helped Brewster to an overall record of 32-6 and the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class AAA championship. Champion is a 2012 graduate of Charlotte (N.C.) Catholic High School, where he led the team to a 22-7 record during his senior year. He averaged 20.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.7 assists per game as a senior, while connecting on 72 of 147 attempts from three-point range (49.0 percent). Champion was named to the NCPreps.com Class 3A All-State team, in addition to earning second team All-District honors in Mecklenburg County. He also played AAU ball for the New England Playaz basketball club.
"We are excited that Robert Champion has decided to join our basketball family," said Brown. "Robert's biggest asset is his ability to shoot the basketball. He will allow us to space the floor because of his three-point range. I really like his work ethic and his willingness to rebound, and he has a good feel for how to play the game."
Holy Cross finished the 2012-2013 campaign with an overall record of 12-18 and a 4-10 mark in the Patriot League.
