Crusaders Suffer 81-70 Loss To Belmont

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Freshman guard Anthony Thompson (Glenn Dale, Md.) tallied a career-high 15 points, four assists and two steals, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Belmont 81-70 in the Baseball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Thompson hit four of five three-point field goal attempts on the night, in addition to making three of four free throws. The Crusaders fall to 2-3 on the season with the loss, while the Bruins improve to 5-1 overall.

Belmont had an excellent game shooting the ball, hitting 56.9 percent of its field goal attempts (29 of 51) and 52.9 percent of its shots from three-point range (nine of 17). Holy Cross was able to hit on 44.7 percent of its shots (21 of 47) and 41.2 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc (seven of 17), in addition to making 87.5 percent of its free throws (21 of 24).

The Crusaders opened the game by scoring the first four points, but the Bruins came right back with a 9-0 run to claim the lead. Belmont was still up by two points (15-13) with 11:24 left before the break, when it used a 12-2 spurt to extend its lead to double digits. The Bruins would eventually take a 44-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Belmont lead grew to 22 points (61-39) with 13:53 remaining in the second half, before Holy Cross used a quick 10-0 run to get back into the game, with Thompson hitting a pair of three-pointers during that spurt. The Crusaders were able to trim the margin down to seven points on three different occasions in the final eight minutes, but could get no closer as the Bruins eventually earned an 11-point victory.

Sophomore guard Cullen Hamilton (Washington, D.C.) finished the game with a team-best 16 points, two rebounds and two assists, while senior forward Dave Dudzinski (Elburn, Ill.) added 15 points and five rebounds. Belmont was led by Craig Bradshaw with 21 points and four assists.

The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Nov. 24, when they face Hartford at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., in their final game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at 6:00 p.m.
