McCabe & Smith Named To FCS ADA All-Star Team

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior offensive tackle Mike McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) and senior center Chris Smith (Buffalo, N.Y.), members of the Holy Cross football team, have been selected to the 2009 Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. A total of 55 student-athletes from schools around the nation were named to the team.

McCabe was selected second team All-Patriot League this season, after starting all 12 games for the Crusaders at right tackle. He was part of an offensive line which paved the way for Holy Cross to rank fourth in the nation in passing offense (314.9 yards per game), sixth in total offense (433.6 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (32.2 points per game). McCabe was also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District for his work in the classroom. Over the last three seasons, he has played in 25 games with 14 starts along the offensive line.

Mike McCabe Smith has been named to the FCS Athletic Directors Academic All-Star team for the second time in his career, after previously being honored in 2007. He was selected second team All-Patriot League this season, after starting all 12 games for the Crusaders at center. Smith was part of an offensive line which paved the way for Holy Cross to rank fourth in the nation in passing offense (314.9 yards per game), sixth in total offense (433.6 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (32.2 points per game). He was also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District for the third straight season, for his work in the classroom. Smith started all 45 of the Crusaders’ games over the last four seasons, setting new school records for games started and consecutive games started.

The FCS Athletic Directors Academic All-Star team consists of players with a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study, who are also starters or key players with legitimate athletic credentials. A special review committee of Football Championship Subdivision athletics directors was responsible for selecting the Academic All-Star Team.

Holy Cross concluded the 2009 season with an overall record of 9-3, and won the Patriot League championship with a 5-1 mark in conference games.
