WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior wide receiver Bill Edger (Hainesport, N.J.) caught seven passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns, as the Holy Cross football team posted a 17-13 victory over Brown at Fitton Field. The win was the 13th straight for the Crusaders at home, tying for the fourth-longest winning streak ever at Fitton Field. Holy Cross improves to 3-3 on the season with the victory, while the Bears fall to 2-2 overall.

The Crusaders opened the scoring at the 5:12-mark of the first quarter on a 31-yard field goal by senior placekicker Rob Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.). Holy Cross then made the score 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter, when senior quarterback Ryan Taggart (Bedford, Texas) threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Edger.

Brown came right back with a five-yard scoring run by Mark Kachmer on its next possession, and the score was 10-6 after the extra point was blocked by sophomore defensive lineman Jack Maliska (Winchendon, Mass.). The Bears then went up 13-10 with just 26 seconds left in the second quarter, when Patrick Donnelly threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Tellef Lundevall.

Brown was still up by three points early in the third quarter, when the Bears were unable to get a punt off under a heavy rush, giving the ball to Holy Cross as the 13-yard line. But the Crusaders could not take advantage, as three plays later a 25-yard field goal attempt went wide right. But on its next drive, Holy Cross took a 17-13 lead when Taggart found Edger for another 12-yard touchdown.

The Bears would have three possessions in the fourth quarter, but the Crusader defense stepped up every time and the final score remained 17-13. Holy Cross stopped Donnelly for one-yard on fourth-and-goal at the five-yard line, before senior free safety Alex Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) intercepted a pass to end Brown's next drive. Then on the final play of the game, junior linebacker Ricky Otis (Cleves, Ohio) recovered a fumble at the 50-yard line after several laterals.

Otis finished the game with a team-high nine tackles, as the defense limited the Bears to just 336 yards on 73 plays. Junior cornerback Chandler Fenner (Virginia Beach, Va.) added five tackles with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.

Taggart hit on 19 of 29 passes for 196 yards and two scores, while splitting time with junior quarterback Kevin Watson (Belle Mead, N.J.), who completed 12 of 18 attempts for 135 yards. Sophomore tailback Eddie Houghton (Toronto, Ontario) led the team in rushing with 50 yards on 12 carries.

The Crusaders return to action next Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Dartmouth for a 1:30 p.m. game.
