Crusaders Suffer 49-7 Loss To #5 Towson

WORCESTER, Mass. – Towson tailback Terrance West carried the ball 17 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns, to lead the fifth-ranked Tigers to a 49-7 victory over the Holy Cross football team at Fitton Field. The Crusaders fall to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while Towson improves to 2-0 overall.

Junior quarterback Ryan Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa.) completed 14 of 30 attempts on the afternoon for 149 yards and a touchdown, with senior wide receiver Mike Fess (Caldwell, N.J.) catching six passes for 81 yards and a score. Freshman tailback Gabe Guild (Overland Park, Kan.) also had a solid game, rushing 14 times for 59 yards and making two receptions for 21 yards.

Towson opened the scoring at the 8:55-mark of the first quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Peter Athens to James Oboh. The Crusaders responded with a 31-yard scoring strike from Laughlin to Fess, tying the game at 7-7. A 33-yard touchdown pass from Athens to Leon Kinnard put the Tigers back in front later in the first quarter, then a one-yard scoring run by West made the score 21-7 with 5:14 left in the second quarter.

Holy Cross drove deep into Towson territory on its next possession, before Thomas Bradley intercepted a pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown, giving the Tigers a 28-7 halftime lead.  Towson would put the game away with three more rushing touchdowns in the second half, from West (three yards), Athens (24 yards) and Brian Dowling (eight yards).

The Tigers totaled 525 yards of total offense and 27 first downs in the game, while the Crusaders were held to just 263 total yards and 16 first downs. Holy Cross also committed the only two turnovers of the day.

Senior linebacker Roman SanDoval (Allison Park, Pa.) led the Crusaders defense with eight tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Senior defensive end Gary Acquah (Bronx, N.Y.) added eight tackles for Holy Cross.

The Crusaders return to action next Saturday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Central Connecticut for a 6:00 p.m. game.
