WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior tailback Steve Silva (East Providence, R.I.) has been named second team All-Atlantic Region by Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette. Silva, who was previously selected second team All-Patriot League, was honored as an all-purpose back.
Silva led the Crusader offense with 708 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 161 carries, in addition to catching a team-best 60 passes for 507 yards and another score. He became the first Holy Cross player since Gordie Lockbaum in 1986 to lead Holy Cross in both rushing yards and receptions. Silva also led the team in scoring with 66 points, and posted a Patriot League-best 1,663 all-purpose yards on the season. Over the course of his career as a Crusader, Silva has totaled 1,733 rushing yards on 426 carries, 100 reception for 826 yards, 23 total touchdowns and 3,019 all-purpose yards.
Although a senior academically, Silva is expected to return to Holy Cross next fall to use his final season of eligibility. He missed the majority of the 2002 season due to injury.
The Crusaders, who went 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the Patriot League last year, are scheduled to open spring practice on Thursday, March 24. The annual spring game is set for Saturday, April 23.
