BROOKLINE, Mass. – Holy Cross 2013 men's golf graduate Steve Zychowski (Mendham, N.J.) was defeated by Sebastian Cappelen of Denmark, 4 & 2, in the round of 64 at the United States Amateur Championship at The Country Club. Zychowski qualified for the match-play event for the first time in his career after shooting a two-round total of plus-three (70-73-143) during the stroke-play tournament, which placed him in a tie for 38th place. Cappelen is a senior on the University of Arkansas men's golf team.
Playing in his third U.S. Amateur, Zychowski carded an even-par round of 70 on the first day of the championship at the Charles River Country Club to put himself in a tie for 19th place on day one. Zychowski qualified for the round of 64 match-play event by shooting a plus-three round of 73 at The Country Club.
During the match-play event versus Cappelen, Zychowski started the match all square through two holes. Cappelen then won back-to-back holes, before Zychowski got one back with a birdie at the fifth hole. However, Cappelen recovered and won the sixth hole to go back ahead by two. He then won the eighth and tenth holes to increase his lead to four, before Zychowski was able to win the 14th hole. However, with a par on the 16th hole, Cappelen claimed the 4 & 2 victory over Zychowski.
Zychowski, who graduated in May of 2013, led the Crusaders last season with an average 18-hole score of 75.7 strokes. He played in all 11 events during the 2012-2013 season won the medalist in the AIC-Adelphi Intercollegiate Classic (Oct. 20-21) and Assumption Shootout (April 16). He earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League team and also was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012-2013.
