WORCESTER, Mass. -
Air Force goaltender Andrew Volkening made a spectacular glove save
on Crusader junior forward Jordan Cyr's (Winnipeg,
Manitoba) wrist shot from the slot at the buzzer as the
Holy Cross men's hockey team was shut out 1-0 by the Falcons Friday
night at the Hart Center. With the loss, the Crusaders drop to
3-5-1 (3-3-1 Atlantic Hockey), while the Falcons improve to 5-5-1
(5-1-1 Atlantic Hockey).
The lone goal of the contest came at the 13:18 mark of the third
period. Falcon forward Matt Fairchild skated in strong from the
right circle, made a move at the goal line and slid the puck
through Crusader freshman netminder Thomas Tysowsky
(Amherst, N.Y.). Brad Sellers and Jeff Hajner picked up
the assists.
The teams played nearly even hockey over the first 40 minutes of
the contest. Air Force held a slim 11-10 edge in shots after the
first period, but Holy Cross outshot the Falcons 12-7 over the next
20 minutes. Air Force returned the favor in the third period,
outshooting the Crusaders 12-7. The Falcons also won 41 of 73
faceoffs in the game.
Volkening's record improved to 5-5-1 with the win, while Tysowsky
dropped to 3-4-1. Both goaltenders made 29 saves on the
evening.
The Crusaders return to action Saturday, Nov. 14 when they again
host Air Force at the Hart Center. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
