Men's Hockey Drops 7-2 Contest To Army

WORCESTER, Mass. – Shane Hearn scored two goals for the Black Knights as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Army, 7-2, at the Hart Center on Saturday evening in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-1-0 overall (2-1-0 AHA), while the Black Knights improve to 2-3-1 overall (2-0-1 AHA).

Army scored three goals in the first period with two on power plays. Zak Zaremba scored a power play goal to open the scoring at 3:57, while Hearn netted his first goal of the game to increase the lead to 2-0 at 11:21. Just 1:37 later, Joe Kozlak found the back of the net while on the power play to give the Black Knights a 3-0 advantage. Army outshot Holy Cross, 14-13, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Black Knights went 2-2.

At 9:40 of the second period and on the power play, senior Kyle Fletcher (Kanata, Ontario) knocked in the puck from the right post of the net for his third goal of the season. Senior Brandon Nunn (Fairport, N.Y.) and freshman Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each posted assists. Just 32 seconds later, the Crusaders scored another power play goal when Nunn found the back of the net for the third time this season to cut the Army lead to 3-2. Senior Evan Zych (Kilbride, Ontario) and Sommer tallied assists. But, the Black Knights then netted three straight goals to move out to a 6-2 advantage. Jonathan Gehrt scored at 10:25, Mac Lalor scored a power play goal at 13:49 and Thane Heller also scored a power play goal at 18:22. Army outshot Holy Cross, 11-9, while each team went 2-4 on the man-advantage.         

Hearn netted his second goal of the game and the only one of the third period when he found the back of the net at 14:00 for the 7-2 final.

Sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 28 saves and is now 3-1-0, while Ryan Leets posted 33 saves to improve to 1-1-0. Each team took 35 shots, while the Crusaders went 2-7 on the power play and the Black Knights went 4-8.

The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Atlantic Hockey opponent Air Force on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, at Cadet Ice Arena at 9:00 p.m.
