Men's Hockey Posts 6-3 Victory Versus Sacred Heart
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Six Crusaders each scored a goal as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 6-3, at the Webster Bank Arena on Sunday in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 6-2-0 overall (5-2-0 AHA), while the Pioneers fall to 0-8-1 overall (0-6-1 AHA). The 6-2-0 record is the best start the Crusaders have had since the 2002-2003 season when they were also 6-2-0 after their first eight games.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead at 4:17 of the first period when Brian Sheehan found the back of the net. Just 28 seconds later, the Crusaders tied the contest at 1-1 when sophomore Mike McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season. Sacred Heart outshot Holy Cross, 12-9, while the Pioneers went 0-2 on the power play.
The Crusaders outscored the Pioneers by a 4-1 margin in the second period to take a 5-2 lead. At 6:03, junior Shayne Stockton (Rochester, N.Y.) netted his first goal of the season. The puck ricocheted off the boards and went to a waiting Stockton in front of the net as he then knocked the puck in the goal. Sophomore Nilan Nagy (Canonsburg, Pa.) and senior Evan Zych (Kilbride, Ontario) tallied assists. Just 46 seconds later, senior Kyle Fletcher (Kanata, Ontario) lifted the puck to the upper right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Freshman Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior captain Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) posted assists. At 10:53, sophomore Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.) scored the Crusaders' fourth straight goal and his third of the season to increase the lead to 4-1. The goal was also his first collegiate game-winner. Freshman Matt Vidal (Manorville, N.Y.) posted his first collegiate point with an assist. The Pioneers made it a 4-2 game with a goal by Ben Ketchum at 17:54. With 47 seconds remaining in the second period, Sommer scored his second goal of the season. Fletcher posted an assist. Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart, 16-6, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the man-advantage.
At 3:57 of the third period, freshman Tim Driscoll (Hingham, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal in his debut as he sent a loose puck to the lower left side of the net to give the Crusaders a 6-2 lead. Sophomore Tommy Dwyer (Ridgefield, Conn.) posted an assist. Just 16 seconds later, Mitchell Stretch netted the last goal of the game for the 6-3 final score.
Sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 21 saves to improve to 6-1-0 on the season. Fredrik Melander posted 14 saves as he played the first 30:53 in net for the Pioneers, while Andrew Bodnarchuk made 17 saves as he played 29:07. Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart, 37-24, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Pioneers went 0-3.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18, when they host Atlantic Hockey opponent RIT at the Hart Center at 3:00 p.m.
