ERIE, Pa. – Junior Adam Schmidt (Warrington, Pa.) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winner in the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Mercyhurst, 2-1, at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 11-6-2 overall (7-3-2 AHA) and have won four of their last six games, while the Lakers fall to 9-8-1 overall (7-4-0 AHA). The 11-6-2 record is the Crusaders' best after the first 19 games of the season since going 12-6-1 in 2005-2006. These two teams will conclude its two-game regular season series on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 7:00 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead at 6:15 of the first period when Chris Bodo found the back of the net for the power play goal. Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 18-13, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the power play and the Lakers went 1-1.
The Crusaders tied the contest at 1-1 at 10:28 of the second period with a goal by sophomore Jake Youso (International Falls, Minn.). The goal was his sixth of the season. Junior Shayne Stockton (Rochester, N.Y.) posted an assist. Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross by a 10-9 margin, while the Lakers went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
Schmidt gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead at 8:25 of the third period with his team-best 10th goal of the season. Freshman Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tallied an assist on the goal. Schmidt now has a team-leading three game-winning goals this season and five for his career. With 55 seconds left in the period, the Lakers went with an empty net but were unable to score the equalizer for the 2-1 final.
Sophomore goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) made 32 saves to improve to 10-5-2 on the season, while Jordan Tibbett posted 36 saves for the Lakers. Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 38-33, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Lakers went 1-3.
