Toporowski Named Men's Hockey Assistant Coach

WORCESTER, Mass.­ - The College of the Holy Cross has named Shayne Toporowski as an assistant men's hockey coach, as announced by head coach Paul Pearl and athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr.

"We are very pleased to add someone with Shayne's playing experience as well as coaching expertise," said Pearl. "He is someone who will help our players get better."

Toporowski came to Holy Cross after serving as the assistant captain and player coach of the CHL's Quad City Mallards in the 2012-2013 season. After graduating high school in 1993, Toporowski was chosen in the second round, 42nd pick overall, of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He played two seasons of major juniors following the draft with the WHL's Prince Albert Raiders before joining the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs. He received the Rookie of the Year Award from the St. John's Maple Leafs in 1995. During the 1996-1997 season with the St. John's Maple Leafs, Toporowski was called up to play three games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the 1997-1999 seasons Toporowski played for the Worcester IceCats. In 2002, Toporowski was selected to be a member of Team Canada for the Skoda Cup in Switzerland. In 2007-2008, he led Rauman Lukko in scoring with 34 points. He earned the Golden Helmet Award in 2008-2009 for leading the team in scoring with 46 points for SaiPa Lappeenranta in Finland. Throughout his 18-year career Toporowski played for 15 different teams in seven different countries. He played in 1,088 career professional games from 1995 to 2013.

Toporowski ran the Toporowski Skills Camp in Worcester, Mass. and Quad Cities, Iowa in 2013. He also served as the On Ice Skills head Instructor for Jeff Oliver's Jacked on the Hill camp at Holy Cross in 2012. Toporowski was the lead instructor for the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. He also earned a High Performance 1 Coach Certification from the Saskatchewan Hockey Association in 2012-2013.
