WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Myles Gillespie (Rye, N.Y.) totaled two goals and two assists, to lead the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over Hartford at the Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Hawks fall to 0-2 overall.
Holy Cross opened the afternoon by scoring the first three goals of the game, and held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Crusaders would then run off five consecutive goals to open the second quarter, building an 8-2 lead with 6:27 left before the break. Senior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals for Holy Cross during that run. Hartford scored the next two goals to make the score 8-4 at halftime, then trimmed the margin to 8-5 early in the third quarter on a goal by Jack Bobzien.
The Crusaders would hold onto the lead throughout the third quarter, and were up 11-7 following a goal by sophomore Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) with 51 seconds left in the period. Holy Cross would not score again in the game, but the defense stepped up to limit the Hawks to only two fourth quarter goals as the Crusaders held on for an 11-9 win.
Hannan, McKenna and sophomore Conor Shanahan (Potomac, Md.) all finished the game with two goals scored, while senior James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) added a goal and three assists. Hartford was led by Rory Nunamahcer with three goals.
Junior Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) earned the victory for Holy Cross, making six saves while allowing nine goals in 60 minutes of action. Frank Piechota took the loss for the Hawks, allowing 11 goals and posting 15 saves.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 26, when they travel to Harvard for a 4:00 p.m. game.
