Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Lafayette, 10-5

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) recorded his first career hat trick by tallying three goals and one assist as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette, 10-5, on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross Field in Patriot League action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 3-8 overall (1-5 PL), while the Leopards fall to 2-8 overall (1-5 PL).

In addition to the performance by Lux, sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) each tallied two goals and one assist for the Crusaders while freshman Ben Williams (Prior Lake, Minn.) recorded eight ground balls. Junior Brian Bock led the Leopards with two goals and two assists while sophomore Adam Broeckaert led the team with four ground balls. Holy Cross won 11 of 18 faceoffs and ground balls 27-20 while outshooting Lafayette 36-31.  The Leopards won the turnover battle by turning the ball over only nine times to the Crusaders' 11 turnovers.

After a goal by Bock gave Lafayette the early lead, Holy Cross responded in the first quarter with three unanswered goals by junior Frank Gaul (Glen Rock, N.J.), Wilkinson and Lux to take a 3-1 lead. McKenna scored for the Crusaders to open the second quarter before two Lafayette goals by sophomore Robert Orazietti made it 4-3 at the half.

The Crusaders came out strong to start the second half as Wilkinson and Lux each recorded their second goal of the game. Bock responded with a goal for the Leopards before freshman Marc Buermann (West Caldwell, N.J.), Lux and junior Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) scored to increase the Crusader lead to 9-4 after three quarters. The fourth quarter was mostly quiet with senior John Floyd scoring for Lafayette and McKenna scoring for Holy Cross to cap off a 10-5 victory for the Crusaders.

Sophomore goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) recorded 13 saves for a .722 save percentage and the win for the Crusaders while senior Jake Hyatt tallied nine saves and suffered the loss for the Leopards.

The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, April 8, when they play Sacred Heart at Holy Cross Field at 7:00 p.m.
