Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Dartmouth, 17-12, In Season-Finale

HANOVER, N.H. – Mike Olentine set a school record for Dartmouth with 10 goals as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to the Big Green, 17-12, on Tuesday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field in non-conference action in the season-finale for both teams. With the loss, the Crusaders conclude the season 3-12 overall, while the Big Green wrap up the season 2-10 overall.

The Crusaders were led by sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) who tallied three goals and four assists for seven points, while junior Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) posted four goals and one assist for five points. Freshman Ben Williams (Prior Lake, Minn.) picked up 12 ground balls and won 22 of 32 faceoffs.

After Dartmouth scored the first six goals of the game, Haarmann ended the Big Green's scoring streak when he found the back of the net with 1:04 left in the first quarter. Dartmouth then responded by scoring the first two goals of the second quarter to increase its lead to 8-1. After a goal by Wilkinson to make it an 8-2 contest, Jack McCormick netted a goal with 11:42 remaining in the second. The Crusaders then scored three straight goals to cut Dartmouth's lead to 9-5. Junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) scored two goals during this stretch and Wilkinson netted one. After a goal by Olentine, Haarmann scored the last goal of the half as the Crusaders trailed 10-6.

The Big Green netted the first goal of the third quarter when Billy Heidt found the back of the net. Freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) tallied a goal with 12:14 to make it an 11-7 game. Olentine increased the lead to 12-7, but a goal by senior captain Matt Smith (North Bethesda, Md.) made the score 12-8. The Big Green then netted three straight to increase their lead to 15-8 with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders then answered with three consecutive goals of their own. Haarmann scored twice and McKenna once to make it an 15-11 contest. The hat-trick was Haarmann's third of the season and the eighth of his career. McKenna also posted a hat-trick for his sixth of the season and the ninth of his career. Olentine scored the next two goals to give him 10 for the day. Wilkinson netted the final goal of the game for the 17-12 final score. The goal was his third of the day for his second hat-trick of the season.

Sophomore goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made 13 saves, while Blair Friedensohn posted 21 saves. Holy Cross outshot Dartmouth, 55-54, while the Crusaders secured 44 ground balls and the Big Green posted 40. Holy Cross won 22 of 32 faceoffs, while the Crusaders went 2-5 on extra-man opportunities and the Big Green went 2-3.
