WORCESTER, Mass.- Senior men's rowing captain, Mike Walker (Monson, Mass.) took part in the annual Polar Plunge this past Saturday, Feb. 23 at Revere Beach to raise money for Special Olympics Massachusetts. Temperatures were 37 degrees at plunge time. Walker and his team, "Auburn's Ice Ice Babys" were able to raise $5,000 for the cause.
The Polar Plunge is the biggest fundraiser for the organization, raising almost 10 percent of its revenue. This year the polar plunges at Revere and Nantasket beaches raised a total of $305,000. The president and CEO of Massachusetts Special Olympics, Mary Beth McMahon said the money raised allows almost 13,000 athletes to participate in the games every year.
