WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford senior forward David Bernhardsson scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lead the Hawks to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday evening at Alumni Stadium. With the win, Hartford begins the 2013 campaign at 1-0-0, while the Crusaders fall to 0-1-0 to start the season.
Both teams remained scoreless after the first half, as Hartford held the 7-2 advantage in shots and the 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Holy Cross freshman forward Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) recorded the first shot for the Crusaders in the 18th minute, but it was pushed aside by Hartford goalkeeper Viltsu Tuumi.
The Crusaders picked up the intensity in the second half. From the 59th minute to the 61st minute, Holy Cross launched four shots toward the Hartford net. The Crusaders had two shots on goal and one shot by DeVivo that hit the crossbar, but they could not find the back of the net.
Bernhardsson's goal came off a cross from Omar Tall that was blocked by a Holy Cross defender. He was able to gather the rebound and fire the shot from the top of the six-yard box that slipped by Holy Cross sophomore keeper Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) to break the stalemate.
Tuumi picked up the shutout for Hartford, making five saves in the winning effort, while Wright pushed aside six shots for the Crusaders.
Hartford held advantages in shots (15-11), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (6-4). Holy Cross, however, edged Hartford in second half shots (9-8).
The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 as they will host Providence at 7:00 p.m. at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
