Men’s Soccer Uses Late Goal To Top Lafayette, 1-0
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior captain Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) netted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lead the Crusaders to a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in Patriot League men's soccer action on Saturday evening at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the win, Holy Cross moves to 5-5-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Leopards fall to 3-2-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Patriot League.
"It was a typical Patriot League game," Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman said. "It was a physical, competitive athletic battle. We battled fiercely all throughout the game and everybody carried out the things that they needed to do. It was a collective effort and hopefully we can carry out what we did at BU and here and move onto the next one."
In the 78th minute, Sanders received a pass from junior defender Gavin Millay (Shelburne, Vt.) from the left side of the box. Sanders then ripped a line drive through the Lafayette back line and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Lafayette had multiple scoring chances throughout the game, but could not get any by Crusader sophomore netminder Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas). In the 18th minute, Alec Golini launched a point blank shot at Wright, but he collected the ball. In the 27th minute, the Leopards' Nate Arronson drove a hard shot from 25 yards out that rang the crossbar and out of harm's way. In the final seconds of the contest, Lafayette had a corner kick. The ball found the foot of Greg Biggiani, but his shot sailed over the net.
Wright made five saves in the contest for his second shutout of the season, while Lafayette goalie Nathan McDonald pushed aside six shots. Holy Cross held the 7-5 edge in shots on goal and the 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, while the Leopards held the 15-14 edge in total shots.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when it will travel to Colgate for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
