WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Matt Wierzel (Garden City, N.Y.) has been named the AT&T Crusader of the Week, for competition from September 7-13. Wierzel won all five of his singles matches last week for the Holy Cross men's tennis team.
During Saturday's 7-2 loss at Coast Guard, Wierzel defeated Nick Martin at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. He then won four straight matches on Sunday, to claim the singles title at the Wheaton Invitational. In the championship match of the Wheaton Invitational, Wierzel downed Kyle Hudgins of Wheaton in a pro set, 8-2.
Over the course of his collegiate career, Wierzel now owns a 19-24 record, playing exclusively at No. 1 singles.
The Crusaders (0-1 overall) return to action on Sunday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Siena for an 11:00 a.m. match.
