WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomores Ross Davies (Salem, N.H.) and Dylan Villescas (Las Cruces, N.M.) led the way for the Holy Cross men's track and field team with first place finishes in Tuesday's home meet versus New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Worcester State. The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of freshman Mike Galasso (Danvers, Mass.), sophomores Nick Athanasidy (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Sam McGrath (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and freshman Trevor Dutton (Burlington, Mass.) also registered a first place finish with a time of 3:22.22.
The Crusaders finished in third place with 149 points behind first place Rhode Island (215) and second place New Hampshire (152). Worcester State rounded out the field with 134 points. Overall, Holy Cross student-athletes landed in the top-five in 13 different events. Davies took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.14 seconds and added a third place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.29 seconds. Villescas crossed the finish line first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:50.07.
Other top finishers included senior Chase Bradford (West Bridgewater, Mass.) who took second in the javelin throw with a distance of 49.62 meters and freshman Drew McAward (Garden City, N.Y.) who finished second behind Villescas in the steeplechase with a time of 10:33.76. Athanasidy and senior Alex Martin (Sutton, Mass.) added two more second place finishes as Athanasity finished the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.07 and Martin jumped 13.86 meters in the triple jump. Martin also finished the long jump in fourth place with a distance of 6.08 meters.
Sophomore Greg Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Dan Altenau (Eastchester, N.Y.) finished third and fourth in the 1,500-meter run with times of 4:04.86 and 4:05.50, respectively. McGrath also took fourth in the 400 meter run with a time of 50.50 seconds. Sophomore Tim Moczula (Edison, N.J.), Galasso, junior Nick Foster (Trumbull, Conn.) and freshmen John Cicchitti (Warminster, Pa.) and Dominic Gerardi (Simsbury, Conn.) rounded out the field of Crusaders with top-five finishes taking fifth place in their respective events. Moczula ran the 110-meter hurdles (16.46), Galasso the 200-meter (22.68), Cicchitti the 5,000-meter (15:35.09), Foster landed in the triple jump at 10.92 meters and Gerardi finished the pole vault at a height of 3.65 meters.
The men's track and field will return to action on Sunday, April 29, when it travels to Providence, R.I. for the Brown Springtime Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
