SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Select members of the Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams ran in the 33rd Annual National Catholic Championship on Friday afternoon, hosted by Notre Dame. A total of 15 runners represented Holy Cross, with the women's team placing ninth of 34 teams and men finishing 16th of 34 teams. Notre Dame won both team titles, totaling 21 points in the women's competition and 31 points in the men's race.
Junior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) led the way for the Holy Cross women's team, finishing 23rd with a time of 18:20.3. Other top finishers for the Crusaders included junior Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) with at time of 18:56.4 and 51st place and freshman Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) who crossed the finish line in 63rd at 19:02.9. Junior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) finished just behind Carley in 67th place with at time of 19:05.9.
On the men's side, sophomore John Cicchitti (Warminster, Pa.) led the Crusaders with a top time of 26:00 and 42nd place finish. Freshmen Dennis Muldoon (Weymouth, Mass.) and Francisco Tejidor (Coral Gables, Fla.) finished behind Cicchitti with times of 26:35 and 26:45, respectively.
Select members of the men's and women's cross country team will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 15, for the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
