WORCESTER, Mass. - On Saturday, Feb. 13, the Holy Cross women's basketball program will host "Pink Zone Day" at the Hart Center during its game versus Bucknell at 3:00 p.m. The team will be donning special edition pink "Sader Nation" t-shirts during warm-ups for breast cancer awareness. The t-shirts will also be sold throughout the game with all proceeds going to the Zona Children's Fund, a trust fund set up for the children of Mary McInerney-Zona, beloved sister of women's basketball associate head coach Ann McInerney as well as towards breast cancer research efforts.
"This is a special event for us because of the way that breast cancer has affected our program," said head coach Bill Gibbons. "This year we will make our donation in memory of Mary McInerney Zona, Coach Mac's sister, who was a wonderful woman and a great friend of Holy Cross women's basketball."
The event is a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Holy Cross as the men's ice hockey team will play Bentley at 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Center. During the game, the squad will be wearing a special edition pink jersey to show its support for breast cancer awareness. The jerseys will also be auctioned off throughout the game with proceeds going to the Levine Cancer Center in Worcester.
The game against Bucknell will also feature a halftime performance by the McInerney School of Irish Step Dance and an auction of pink player practice jerseys, to be held 10 minutes after the end of the game.
"As Mary Mac fought the good fight, so will we." continued Gibbons. "We will continue her fight and strive to put an end to this dreadful disease."
The special edition pink "Sader Nation" t-shirts will be on sale at the promotions table throughout Saturday's contest and are already available via the Holy Cross Athletics Online Store. Donations for the Zona Children's Fund and research efforts will be accepted during the game as well.
