WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) totaled 22 points and five rebounds to lead the Holy Cross women's basketball team to a 69-57 win in an exhibition game against Assumption at the Hart Center Tuesday night. Sophomore forward Amy Lepley (Norfolk, Mass.) added 10 points and a team leading seven rebounds.
Assumption held a lead for the first seven minutes of the first half, going up by five points early on at the 18:09 mark. Holy Cross battled back with 7:12 left to go in the half, taking over the lead the rest of the way and going into the halftime up 36-26. The team scored 24 of its points in the paint and 19 off turnovers as Fremeau led the way with 10 points.
The Crusaders never looked back, going up by as much as 13 points in the second half. The squad maintained at least a 10 point lead from the 7:44 mark on and finished with the 69-57 final tally. The team saw 15 points from its bench while freshman starting guard Brisje Malone (Springfield, Mass.) tallied seven of her nine total points in the second stanza.
Holy Cross shot 52.9 percent from the field (27 of 51) and 50 percent from three-point range (four of eight) on the night, in addition to posting a 30-28 advantage on the boards.
Assumption was led by sophomore forward Kelly Meredith who scored 17 points, going seven of nine from the field.
The Crusaders will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 12, when they host Yale beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
