WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross women's basketball head coach Bill Gibbons and the rest of his staff will host the 16th annual Crusader Legend Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, Mass. This year's tournament will honor the 20th anniversary of the 1990-1991 Holy Cross women's basketball team.
The 1991 Holy Cross women's basketball team reached levels unseen in women's basketball history. On Jan. 19 the squad, hosting the No 3-ranked Rutgers team, topped the Scarlet Knights, 78-67, before a crowd of over 2,000 Crusader fans. The team, which earned an 11-seed in the 1991 NCAA Tournament, went on to prove that they were top tier, beating nationally-ranked Maryland (the No. 6-seed), 81–74, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to earn the program's first win in the Big Dance. Mary Helen Walker led the team with 26 points while Norinne Powers pulled down 10 boards. The 1990–1991 team finished the season with 25 wins and just six losses, going a perfect 12-0 in the Patriot League and taking home the first of 11 Patriot League Tournament crowns. The team now holds program records in the number of free throws made (568), most wins in a season (25) and most consecutive wins (15).
The day will begin with breakfest and registration at 7:30 a.m. followed by the shot-gun start at 8:15 a.m. A luncheon honoring the Crusader legend will follow the tournament.
People wanting to participate can either sign up for breakfast and golf or breakfast, lunch and golf. Sponsorship opportunites are also available. All proceeds will benefit the Holy Cross women's basketball program.
