Women's Basketball Tops Assumption, 63-50, In Exhibition Game

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior captain Meredith Ward (Westerly, R.I.) scored a team-high 15 points and tallied six assists to lead the Holy Cross women's basketball team to a 63-50 win in an exhibition game against Assumption at the Hart Center. Sophomore Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.) added 13 points, including nine in the second half.

Holy Cross went up 5-0 early in the first half and never let go of the lead. A layup by Ward at 8:26 put the team up by 10 points, 23-13. The Crusaders then went on to take their largest lead in the half, 32-17, at 4:55. Assumption scored the final two baskets of the front stanza to make the halftime score 32-21. Ward led all scorers with 12 points as Holy Cross shot a combined 54.2 percent from the floor.

Assumption cut the Crusaders' lead to nine points, scoring the first two baskets of the second half. Holy Cross then pulled back ahead by 17 points, 48-31, at the 12:58 mark on Smith's second-consecutive three-point shot. Fellow sophomore Brisje Malone (Springfield, Mass.) gave the team a 20-point advantage at 8:50, sinking a layup. The Greyhounds got as close as 13 points with a little over one minute left to play, but the Crusaders held on for the 63-50 victory.

Holy Cross shot 50 percent from the field (25 of 50) and posted a 36-18 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Christine Ganser (Needham, Mass.) put up a team-high six rebounds while Malone and junior Amy Lepley (Norfolk, Mass.) each added 11 points. Assumption was led junior guard Gabrielle Gibson, who scored 10 points.

The Crusaders will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11, traveling to Yale for a 7:00 p.m. game at the John J. Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn.
