WORCESTER, Mass.- Holy Cross senior women's basketball player Meredith Ward (Westerly, R.I.) has been named the 2012 Samantha Vellaccio award recipient. Ward received the honor at the team's end of the year banquet on May 9. The Vellaccio Award is presented annually by the Holy Cross Varsity Club to the varsity women's basketball player who best exemplifies the mission of Holy Cross both on and off the court.
Ward was named the team's lone captain for the 2011-2012 season and started at guard in all 33 games, averaging a career-best 30.4 minutes and 6.1 points. Her playing time increased dramatically during her senior season as she averaged 21.3 minutes over her first three years. Ward notched four double-digit scoring outings, highlighted by her first career double-double against UMass on Nov. 22. She scored 14 points and tallied a career-best 12 rebounds, almost doubling her previous high of seven rebounds. As a junior, Ward registered a Holy Cross single-game record when she went 12-for-12 from the free throw line against Quinnipiac.
Ward was chosen as team captain this past season due to her commitment to the team and strong leadership skills. She will graduate in May with a degree in Economics and plans on working with the Phoenix Suns organization after graduation.
