WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball head coach Bill Gibbons and athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr., have announced the Crusaders' schedule for the 2012-2013 season, with the first home game slated for Friday, Nov. 9.
The home opener will be against Yale (Nov. 9) followed by three more home games against Boston College (Nov. 13), New Hampshire (Nov. 17) and Harvard (Nov. 20). The first month of action ends with an away game at Massachusetts (Nov. 25) and a home game against Central Connecticut (Nov. 28).
The month of December will be a lot of travelling for the Crusaders, with four away games followed by a trip to Florida over Holy Cross's academic winter break. Their away contests include Manhattan (Dec. 1), Northeastern (Dec. 5), Quinnipiac (Dec. 8) and Bryant (Dec. 21). During their Florida road trip they will be competing against Florida (Dec. 28) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 30).
"We're excited about this year's schedule," said Holy Cross head coach Bill Gibbons. "We start with a terrific home stand, including Boston College from the ACC, followed by a tough December road trip and a game at SEC opponent Florida. That stretch will test us and prepare us for a very strong Patriot League this year."
The Crusaders will travel to Dartmouth for the first contest of the New Year on Jan. 3, and end their away streak at Fordham (Jan. 6). They will return to the Hart Center Jan. 8, for their final non-conference game of the season against Brown. The game will also be their second annual "Community Day" contest, as students from around the Worcester Public Schools will come show their support.
Patriot League play begins at home on Jan. 12 against Lehigh followed by another home game versus Navy (Jan. 16) where they will face the team that beat them in the Patriot League championship game last year. The team will travel to American (Jan. 19) before hosting Lafayette (Jan. 23) and then hitting the road again for games at Bucknell (Jan. 26) and Army (Jan. 30). Holy Cross will host Colgate (Feb. 2) before it starts the second round of Patriot League play. The Crusaders will be away at Lehigh (Feb. 9) and Navy (Feb. 13) before returning home for American (Feb. 16). The team will then play at Lafayette (Feb. 20) before hosting its last two home games of the regular season, with Bucknell (Feb. 23) and Army (Feb. 27). They will wrap up the regular season at Colgate (Mar. 2).
"The team believes we have some unfinished business to take care of after our strong late season run last year," said Gibbons. "We came up just short of 20 wins and just short of our 12th Patriot League Title....our ultimate goal this year. Our hope is that this tough schedule will prepare us to finish our business and capture that title and another NCAA berth this season!"
Gibbons enters his 28th season with the Crusaders with 10 returning players, including 2011-2012 first team All-Patriot League selection junior Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.), second team All-Patriot League selection senior Amy Lepley (Norfolk, Mass.) and All-Rookie team member sophomore Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa). They welcome five newcomers to the roster.
