Women’s Basketball To Hold Numerous Events On Saturday
WORCESTER, Mass. – On Saturday, Feb. 16, the Holy Cross athletic department and the Women's Basketball team will host a number of events for the Crusaders game versus American in celebration of Winter Homecoming. The day's events will begin with the women's basketball alumnae game at 12:30 p.m. for former players.
Following the alumnae game, the Holy Cross athletic department will hold a reception in the Bud Ryan Room at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Coeducation at Holy Cross. During the reception, former student-athletes, coaches and administrators from the 1970s to the present will share brief reflections about women's athletics at Holy Cross. The reception is open to all former and current female student athletes and their families.
After the reception, the Holy Cross women's basketball team will hold its annual "Think Pink Day," in which the team will wear special pink uniforms to show its support for breast cancer awareness. The game will begin with a ceremonial tip-off by Ann Lauring, who is a friend of the women's basketball program. At halftime, the Mary McInerney-Zona Irish Dancers will perform for the audience. Immediately following the game, the Rev. George L. O'Brien Award will be awarded to the game's most valuable player.
Ending the day's events, the women's basketball team will auction off the pink uniforms worn during the game to raise money for PINK Revolution, which is an alliance of dedicated individuals with a unified commitment to those touched by breast cancer. Its mission is to support early detection and prevention strategies, fund clinical research advancements and promote survivorship programs in Central Mass. through its affiliation with the UMass Memorial Comprehensive Breast Center. All of the proceeds from the auction will go directly to PINK Revolution.
"We're really excited about all the events that are happening on Saturday," Holy Cross women's basketball head coach Bill Gibbons said. "The Hart Center should be packed and the atmosphere will be electric! A family gathering with camaraderie, celebration and fun…for a great cause!"
"Think Pink Day" is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Holy Cross as the men's ice hockey team will host "Pink the Rink" for its contest at 7:00 p.m. The women's ice hockey team held its "Pink the Rink" on Feb. 1.
