Alex Smith Named A Senior CLASS Award Candidate

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior guard Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.) has been named one of the 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award for Division I women's basketball. The Senior CLASS Award recognizes NCAA student-athletes who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Women's Final Four.

Smith has been one of the key factors to Holy Cross' success on the court over the past few seasons. Named first team All-Patriot League as a sophomore and junior, Smith has helped lead the Crusaders to the Patriot League Championship game two seasons in a row. She also became the 29th Holy Cross player to score 1,000 career points and the 10th Crusader to do so in their junior season. In 2012-2013, Smith led the Patriot League with 14.5 points and 2.9 three-pointers made per game. During the 2011-2012 season, she led the Patriot League with 5.5 assists per contest. She ranks 16th on the Holy Cross' all-time scoring list and second in career three-pointers made. Smith was also named to the 2010-11 Patriot League All-Rookie Team. In her career she has compiled 1208 points, 403 assists, 351 rebounds and 156 steals over 95 games.

She is a two-time co-captain and has been a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy for three years. Smith has also been heavily involved in the Worcester community. She serves as the coordinator of Holy Cross' participation in Team Impact and also makes weekly visits to the Parsons Hill Nursing Home in Worcester to interact, play games and talk with senior citizens. This past summer, Smith worked as a summer youth volunteer coordinator intern at the United Way in Worcester. At the internship, she coordinated 13 volunteer events in the Worcester community while managing over 40 youths from 13-17 years old. Smith also plays a vital role in organizing annual events with the team, such as Holy Cross Cares Day, the Mercy Center Basketball Game and the Walk to Cure Cancer.

A Psychology major with a minor in American Sign Language, Smith holds a 3.38 grade-point average. During the 2012-2013 season, she was one of six players named to the Academic All-Patriot League team. She was also a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

The Crusaders will host an exhibition game against Assumption at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Hart Center before the 2013-2014 season officially begins on Friday, Nov. 8, as Holy Cross will entertain Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
