WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward Christine Ganser (Needham, Mass.), a member of the Holy Cross women's basketball team, is the 2013-2014 recipient of the Samantha Vellaccio Award. The Vellaccio Award is presented annually to the varsity women's basketball player who best exemplifies the mission of Holy Cross both on and off the court.
"Her leadership and her example as a role model and mentor for her teammates has been exemplary," Holy Cross head women's basketball coach Bill Gibbons said. "This year, she overcame personal adversity and helped lead her team to 20 wins and another trip to the Patriot League title game. Her poise, positive attitude, character and leadership came shining through like none other has in my 29 years with this program. She is a 'woman for others' in every way, an outstanding ambassador for Holy Cross women's basketball, and is truly deserving of this award."
After missing the first 13 games of the year with an injury, Ganser appeared in the final 19 contests of the season with three starts. A co-captain on the 2013-2014 team, she averaged 3.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while hitting 40.7 percent of her field goals (24 of 59) and 34.6 percent of her three-point attempts (14 of 36).
A two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Ganser played in 115 career games with 34 starts. She totaled 646 points, 476 rebounds, 80 assists and 64 steals as a Crusader, while connecting on 40.8 percent of her field goals (202 of 495) and 71.7 percent of her free throws (205 of 286). Ganser will graduate in May with a degree in Biology.
