WORCESTER, Mass. - Megan Evans scored 15 points and Jen Hansen added 14 to lead the Army women's basketball team past Holy Cross, 62-49 in Patriot League play Wednesday night at the Hart Center. With the loss the Crusaders fall to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the league as the Black Knights improve to 15-2 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.
Army started off the game 6-0 in the first two minutes of play, but Holy Cross retaliated 4-0 to stay within two points (4-6). The Crusaders remained within four points of the Black Knights until senior Kaitlin Foley (Albany, N.Y.) stole the ball tapping it to freshman Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) who broke away and exchanged a quick pass with freshman Christy Cushnie (Vienna, Va.) to set up a lay up that knotted the game at 15. O'Dell followed up with a three to put the Crusaders ahead 18-15 with 6:09 minutes left in the half. The teams went back and forth for the next few minutes and tied again at 22 with 3:02 left, but Holy Cross went on a 9-4 streak to go into the break with a five point lead (31-26).
Army came out of the locker room and scored 11-6 to tie the game at 37 (16:09). The Black Knights took the lead as Jen Hansen sunk one from the three-point range (40-37). Holy Cross stayed strong matching Army on a nine point run to stay within two (49-47) with just over nine minutes left in the second half. The score remained 49-47 for the next five minutes until Army put up seven unanswered points (56-47) to take a nine point lead with 2:38 minutes left. In the last two minutes of the game Army went 4-1 to seal the win, 62-49.
Three players had ten or more points for Army as O'Dell was the only Crusader in double digits with a team-high 15 points.
