HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) scored 18 points to lead the Holy Cross women's basketball team to a 72-52 victory over Colgate in Patriot League action at Cotterell Court on Wednesday night. Sophomore forward Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) added 12 points for the Crusaders, and senior forward Jessica Merrihue (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored a career-high 12 points. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 9-12 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League. The Raiders fall to 4-17 on season and 0-6 in league play.
Colgate started the game hot, and jumped out to a 19-10 with less than nine minutes left in the first half. Holy Cross retaliated with 14-2 run to claim the lead, with McFadden scoring five points and Merrihue adding four points during that spurt. A layup by Tayler Wejnert brought the Raiders within one point (24-23), before the Crusaders closed out the first half with a 13-2 run, giving Holy Cross a 37-25 lead heading into the locker room.
Colgate started the second half with a three-pointer by Gretchen Polinski to cut the Crusader lead to nine points, but Holy Cross responded with an 11-4 run and would lead by at least 11 points for the rest of the game. The Crusaders eventually went up by 22 points late in the second half, before finally posting a 20-point victory.
McFadden scored nine of her 18 points from the free-throw line and finished with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Fremeau had seven rebounds and two assists while Merrihue tallied three rebounds and one assist. Freshman center Marygrace Jay (Vienna, Va.) came off the bench for the Crusaders, tallying a career-high five points and one steal. Tayler Wejnert led the Raiders with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and one steal.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when it plays host to Lehigh in a Patriot League game at 1:00 p.m.
