HC Women Defeats Colgate, 59-37

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) led the team with 15 points while sophomore forward Tayana Carper (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had a career-high 14 points to lead the women's basketball team past Colgate in Patriot League play, 59-37. Holy Cross improves to 11-10 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League while Colgate drops to 1-20 on the season and 0-6 in league play.
The first 10 minutes both teams struggled on offense with Holy Cross leading the Raiders, 15-5, as sophomore guards Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) and Christy Cushnie (Vienna, Va.) each hit a shot from outside the arc.
Colgate cut its deficit to five, 19-14, but Holy Cross retaliated by going on a quick 5-2 run to take a 10-point advantage as McFadden hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining in the half.
The Crusaders came out hot to start the second half, scoring 8-1 run as McFadden hit another shot from long range, keeping a 14-point advantage over Colgate (34-20). Holy Cross gained as much as a 24-point lead three times in during the final 5:44 of the game. The Crusaders won the game by 22 points, 59-37, notching their fourth league victory of the season.
McFadden's 15 points recorded the 14th time she has the led the Crusaders in game-scoring this season, sinking four-of-seven shots from outside the arc. In addition to her 14 points, Carper had six rebounds, two blocks and one assist. Junior forward Kathy Gruzynski (Elk Grove, Ill.) had a career-high nine rebounds and chipped in six steals, four points and three assists.
Sami Kozlowski led the Raiders in scoring with 15 points, all scored from three point range and grabbed four assists and three rebounds.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, February 2 as it travels to Lehigh for a Patriot League game at 1:00 p.m.
